Nikon DX VR 18-200 mm

hi all
Going to buy a Nikon D80 and am thinking on going all out on the Nikon DX VR 18-200 mm lens.
Anybody uses…opinion etc?
CheersCrowdedHouseParticipantKPMParticipantI got my 18-200 VR11 lense after a wait of about 6 months. Bought it through Halls cameras in town, and they really pushed Nikon UK for it, but still had to wait in line.
Haven’t really managed to give it a good run out yet, but have noticed a couple of things.
The VR11 sucks your battery dry. Getting about 75% of what I would normally get per charge.
Focus can be a bit iffy in low light, have pressed the shutter but no photo as the autofocus was still searching.
Its not great for sports photography despite the focal length. At F5.6 the 200mm (300 on digital) it doesn’t throw the background out of focus enough. That said, I have managed to get some great, pin sharp shots when shooting a few landscapes for a client the other day. The mid range lengths are also pin sharp and great for portraiture.
It would really depend on what you want to use the lense for, but as a general lens, with a huge zoom, so far I like it….a lot.

AsterixParticipantSo its hard to get a hold of i presume…….better get in line so,
Cheers for the commentsjb7Participantread kenrockwell’s review at kenrockwell.com-
kinda have to agree with him about this lens-
but be warned- you really will want one then.
I’ve got a picture posted in the sports forum, Liffey descent 2006- taken at the 200mm end.close focus is really very good too, takes subjects almost credit card sized.
vr really works too, was a revelation.
It does suffer from vignetting at the long end wide open, but this can easily be removed in post processing.
all in all, less compromises than you might expect from a lens of this range.Read kenrockwell’s review, he’s got about 20 pages on it, and take his huge american enthusiasm with a pinch of salt, but I can really vouch for most of it.
AsterixParticipantcheers ill check that out, work with americans so taking american enthusiasm with a pinch of salt has almost become a sixth sense by now!
Noely FParticipantshrapnelMemberi’ve just received a mail from pixmania telling me they’ve got one in stock if that’s of any interest. Their listed price is ?504
CrowdedHouseParticipantYea,got email from Pixmania Tuesday night, clicked and they were showing in stock, but by Wed morning they were gone when I checked.
I have one ordered elsewhere and knowing my luck I would have ended up with two !
Maybe supplies are coming……I notice the Hong Kong ebayers prices are beginning to drop a bit
shrapnelMemberlet me know if you want me to try and order it at pixmania and see if they have it. i’d ordered it months ago and bought it elsewhere months ago so they might still have me on their books
