    Love the 2nd and 3rd shots…

on the 3rd one i would darken it a little bit more to get a bit more contrast, though it’s a superb shot imho.

AWWWW you know how i feel about these shots, and i still want a print of the third
I really love the third shot. The lines, the little girl, the presentation. Super.
You’ve heard my critique before but very well done and delighted that you posted :)

Great Shots. You probably should have posted them separately becasue the instinct is to compare and pick a favourite and these are all pretty good shots ;)

Three is just in a class of its own.. I simply adore it.

I’m not sure, but I think I’ve seen shot 3 somewhere before?? It’s simply stunning.. proof of the power of composition. So simple yet really really effective, I think it’s cracking.

thats possible, its picked up a couple of awards, it was originally in colour and it works equally aswell in colour, matter of personal opinion, thanks for the praise.

Excellent captures, particularly number 3. Marvellous composition, stunning photograph.

Hey ‘Irish Gerry’ – just discovered your pbase gallery with some of these images in it. Saw your photos on Fred Miranda and then linked to pbase. Some good stuff in there!

    Very nice b&w photos!
These three shots just present that monochrom photography never die.

I am going to go against the grain here and say that these photos do nothing for me! I don’t think that the first two are technically poor, the presentation especially lets them down – 1st is oversharpened and overexposed IMO. Number 2 has an interesting subject, but the composition does nothing to draw me in.

I think number 3 is nice, but could have been a whole lot better. I know the point is the small girl on the journey up the big steps, but IMO this feels more like a snapshot of the moment than some kind of iconic photo worthy of a few awards you say it has won.

I don’t do a lot of people shots, so maybe I just ‘don’t get it,’ but I really feel we have slipped into the nice-shot syndrom here.

Like the 3rd shot (I would have possibly gone for less height, I think the print needs to be quite big to get the subject), they all look a bit contrasty, that may just be the scans. The 2nd shot has some great expressions as does the 1st (bit too much DoF?)

Thanks for sharing. I like them.

Nice shot syndrome? Nah, I disagee Steve. All of these have a narrative that is missing from many people shots.

    Si.

Your honest opinion and theres nothing wrong with that, its never concerned me what people think of my photos, unless off course its a client and they dont want to pay for some reason or another lol. I appreciate your honesty and your comments and thanks for taking the time to reply. Im a big boy i can take it lol.

It is encouraging that SteveD not only made up his own mind on these photos, but was willing to stick his head above the parapet and say that they didn’t appeal to him even when he knew he was going against the grain (pardon the pun).
If you see a photo gaining praise from several sources, and you don’t agree, it takes courage to stand up and say it.
    So well done Steve!

As for me, I can’t make my mind up…..

The first one does not look to me as if the photographer did anything other than take a shot, so composition and angle could be improved imho.
The third one could be a great shot, but to me the steps are a little too much in its current form – I might have preferred to wait for the girl to get up several steps and then take it?
