Permission to take Photos at the Fun Fair

Funderland is in Belfast at the moment, but due to move on in a few days time. Friday evening being the night that our Granddaughter comes to stay we decided to have a family night out at the Fun Fair while it was right on our doorstep so-to-speak.
Home from work and a quick supper, we set off for an evening?s fun.

We had been at the fair for about 15 minutes when a Security Patrol stepped in front of me and told me that I had to get permission to take photos. He was quite polite so, I didn?t give my usual response, but instead asked ?Why?. ?Management Rules? he replied, ?You?ll have to ask at the office?. ?Here we go? I thought, and when I asked where the office was he said that he would show me.

He escorted me to a trailer which served as the site office and said to the lady on reception ?Chap here wants permission to take photos?. When I explained that I was simply out for the evening with my grandkids and wanted to take photos for my own use I was told ?That?s fine, I will let security know that you have permission?

I was asked about an hour later by another security patrol if I had permission but when I said ?Yes? that I had been to the office they were happy.

Funderland is run by Wm Bird (Sales) Ltd based in Limerick, and have a website http://www.funfair.ie To the management I would like to award 9 out 10 for good practice and common sense. That?s for recognising that not every bloke with a camera is a terrorist or a paedophile, and for employing Security people who can do their job in a polite and non-confrontational manner. We had a great time, the grandchildren loved it, and I got some cracker photos. They would have got 10/10 but I still think it?s silly to even have to ask permission to take photos at the fun fair.

Les, last year I was taking photos of the Funderland Big Wheel from a public footpath. I was approached by a group of 4 people asking me if the photos were for public or private use (that was literally the first thing they said – not even an hello). I politely told them that what I was taking photos of and why, wasn’t really of any concern to a group of strangers approaching me on a public path!

However, I know they let my old camera club take photos inside, so the management seem to be pretty decent.

BPIC Camera Club was there on Thursday evening with the permission of the management – same as last year. We were even given some tickets for free rides so we could go up the big wheel for instance, to take photos.

The man on this stall just hates being photographed, and you can see the frustration on his face! Several times I saw him shouting at photographers not to photograph but the security guys didn’t bat an eyelid – they just laughed!
