Hello folks and folkettes :)
I’m new here so thought I’d say hi and give a bit of a schpeel about myself.
I’ve always been fascinated by photography but never really tried to do it properly until digital became affordable and useable, I was always more interested in painting and probably still am I suppose (only I was never very good at it!). I like getting out into the wild countryside and tracking down ancient remains, and nothing is better than spending a whole weekend in Sligo, Cork or Kerry hunting down places people almost never go. Most of these places are not traditionally ‘beautiful’ or landscape fodder but often have a charm of themselves and a deep sense of history. I’m not a traditional style of landscape photographer either, I suppose I treat subjects in the landscape as you would a portrait, the main subject is very obvious and I’ll use whatever means of lighting available (flash/torch/daylight/moonlight) to try and make it look extraordinary. My main goal is mood and atmosphere, composition often comes a poor second place and it probably shows :) When the light is right I’m usually in a rush to get as many angles in as possible before it passes so I dont use a tripod as much as I really should. Working on that :)
I dont drag myself over hot coals about proper exposure or technique, I go with what feels right at the time and I dont care too much if there was a cleverer way to do it as long as it captures something of what made me take the photo. I’m not a big fan of using handed down compositional formulas in the field (too lazy mostly) but I really admire those who use them masterfully (Joe Cornish, David Ward, Niall Benive etc. etc. etc.). My main inspiration comes from painters, especially Van Gogh and Turner and I’m deeply jealous of their ability to use whatever colours/tones they wish without people complaining that it does’t look real :) I’m open to interpretative use of colour and tone that enhances the idea or feel of the photo but I’m not into effects for effects sake or adding physical stuff that wasn’t in the scene and made you take the photo in the first place (but again there are those that do this so well that it becomes ‘art’ and not just smart-arsery :) )
Well there’s a little bit of background, hope I haven’t alienated or offended too many people, and I hope to enjoy discussing all this and more with ye all :)

jb7ParticipantQuite a manifesto Ken, can’t imagine you would have offended anyone yet, but there’s plenty of time for that. Itseems like you must have a shoebox somewhere, so the sooner you open it up the better- can’t wait-
joseph
v. comprehensive yet concise review of the D200 btw, would have to agree with most of it-
MarkKeymasterCian,

Ken
AliParticipanthey Ken, there’s some of my work in the Gallery section on this site. I’m changing hosting companies and rebuilding the site so should be couple of weeks before it’s up again.
earthairfireParticipantWelcome aboard, Ken!
A man after my own heart, going and exploring places nobody else ever does! I have found myself on a few occasions in disused mental asylums and factories (oh the glamour!) trying to see another angle of the world around us, that your average mr normal will never come across (not posted any of those shots on here yet, mind)! Can’t wait to see your shots.
Tim
