Coming for a pint?

Critique welcome. I was just waiting for someone to come out and lean against the doorway with a cigarette in their mouth, ahh well :D.

All I’m seeing is a little red x in a box, but it’s very nice Ali :) Looks like Devart is down again.

Paperdoll, i’ve linked to my user gallery on the site, so those logged in should be able to see it. (Fingers crossed :) )

Maybe you should have inserted yourself in that doorway, wouldn’t be an option for me, if I was taking it, but you could do it. (just a shame the D200 doesn’t have a remote control). I think you’re right, the space to the right is a little vacant, expectant. Everything else seems perfect. I wonder whats going on behind the curtains, with you pointing the camera at them?

Oh yeah, I see it now. And it looks great to me. “Old Ireland” postcard sorta feeling to it….was that the intention?
I get the feeling that bikes owner is inside supping guinness! I like the way he/she discarded their bicycle – obviously someone was setting one up on the bar for them!

personally i think the ’empty’ doorway is integral to the feeling of the shot.
i love the ‘expectant’ nature it conveys it reminds me of manuel alvarez bravo only in colour :-D

Love it Ali, much better than the red x. I’d agree with David that the empty door works really well, and in my opinion the vacant space to the right of the door doesn’t detract from the image at all; fill it and it would ruin the overall feel, crop it and the scale would be spoiled. The only one think I might have changed would be to have gone over and turned the handlebars of the bicycle to wrap that front wheel around the barrell instead of that narrow tyre only view. Great shot though, very ‘picture postcard’. Well spotted and well taken.

Thanks all for the comments and critique, if only i had more time to roam the irish countryside :) I’ve always been drawn to pictures like this, and most of the time they don’t include people. There’s definitely something that attracts me to the “auld times”. I do like the feeling whereby you’re almost waiting for someone to come out of the door. It’s nice to see people build a story around the shot too. Thanks again for comments :) *Gone to look up manuel alvarez bravo :D *

jb7 – god only knows what they are doing behind that curtain

    Lovely shot, Ali.
I like this sort of thing.

    Small criticism – it’s over-sharpened.
You can see halos where strong shadows meet light areas – the shadow of the down pipe, gutter, window sill and signs, around the bike and barrell. I know the textured wall needs some sharpening, so maybe isolate it.

Good narrative Ali. Agree about shrpening (try mid-tone sharpening), I like the front wheel of the bike as-is, gives a sense of depth.

Thanks guys for the feedback. Glad you like. I’m delighted you pointed that out. I never usually sharpen the whole image (usually do it with a selection on a channel) so i’m miffed about the halos. I did a selective colour on the wall so maybe that’s what caused it. Either way i need to brush the detail. Much appreciated.
