Office Shoes – by Little Red Riding Hood

AliParticipant
It’s amazing what you can conjure up when you’re absolutely shattered. I should really deprive myself of sleep more often.
Comments and critique welcome.JohnnyMcMillanParticipantLooks good…probably would have made background darker to highlight the foreground more…
jb7Participantsorry, Ali, I’m gonna risk drawing the anger and derision of the entire site by suggesting that this picture may be suffering from a bit of confusion. The headline says ‘Office Shoes’, and the shoes are pretty prominent, so I’m guessing that this is pitched at, if not advertising, then at least, the Fashion Feature. Now I’m not a woman, or ‘in Fashion’, and you’ll just have to take my word for it that I’m not the target market for the product.
So although I’m not at all qualified to comment, I will anyway.
First- the backround- it is a backround, and lit from the opposite side to your lighting for the model. Also a completely different level of contrast-
Then the hands, arms, fishnet and bangles- all crying out for attention- the fingers look particularly awkward, and the exaggerated pointing looks a bit laboured. Though the hands look good; I think it would be a matter of spending more time on the pose. Then there are the shoes- looks like the heels are inserted into the cleavage, strange on many levels. Are you trying to sell them to the blokity Blokes on this site? (sorry Pete, not you in particular) I would have thought that the 5 inch heels would be something a woman would want to see, or Office would want to show, they are a big part of the design of this shoe. They might even benifit from their own light through a snoot-
Overall, It kinda has the look of a dominatrix in a shoestore, and I’m not sure the women will go for that, but obviously, bottom line is- I don’t know-
On the plus side, it is well composed as a picture, and does show a healthy level of ambition, which is probably why I’m being so hard on you- and after all it is a lot easier to comment than to produce this kind of work in the first place. So there you are, I’ve ordered my ton of bricks, and I’m sure they’ll be delivered here quite soon-
j
ps, maybe this kind of shot might be better as a slill life, or maybe if you are going to use a model, then maybe the model could form a backdrop for the product, in a highly composed style? Maybe like a Man Ray? or something?
ok, I’ll stop now.
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantI have to say…JB7….about Ali’s photos…in some respects you’re right and wrong…but then again it’s all about personal taste…but I have to take my hat off for just saying what you think…sometimes on forums people have a tendancy just to say nice things the whole time, and if they don’t, they just seem to get shot down the whole time…anyway, that’s all I wanted to say…
AliParticipantHave to hand it to you jb7 for having the “balls” to comment :). I don’t know if you have seen many of my “other” shots but yep, they are rather confusing.
Aimed at no one, just my mind on overdrive – is it a fairytale, does it suggest fetish, is she selling the shoes, etc etc. Please don’t confuse this picture with trying to please people. I please myself and people can jump on board if they like :) I’ve been shooting a couple of months now – i’ve alot to learn. All of your comments are very much appreciated.jb7ParticipantIts a serious shot Ali, deserves to be taken seriously. It is on the level of a manufactured shot, everything is there because you put it there. I think the frame, and the title containing the manufacturer’s name, made me think of it in terms of advertising, or editorial, and its a lot better than some shots I’ve seen in magazines, though thats actually beside the point-
I hope you’ve taken it in the spirit intended, and that the balls you mention don’t form a potential target for some of those shoes-
AliParticipantThanks a mil jb7 – i really do appreciate the comments. You were definitely right to think of editorial and advertising, i’ll be honest, it’s not far off what i was trying to achieve. That said – not to be taken seriously and a bit of a piss take. I should send you a link to some of my other off the wall ideas. Let’s just say, an incredible hulk teddy bear gets an awful roasting  As for the balls and the heels .. not necessary ;)
jb7ParticipantciaranParticipantI’m pretty much on JB7’s side of the fence on this one.. I’ve looked and looked and looked again. I can’t really critique it because I just don’t know what to critique. All in all though, it looks more like an exercise in photoshop and letting your mind roam (both good things) than a serious fashion shot?
Not Pete the blokeParticipantThis works for me Ali! I think it has ‘product-shot’ stamped all over it, but it conjures up all sorts of ideas. The similarity of the breast curve and the shape of the stiletto shoe is something I remember seeing in one of Josie’s portfolio images – a close up topless shot with petals, if I remember rightly? Not something one would expect to have similar curves but it works….
And one thing I will also say – the execution of the ‘cut-out’ of Josie is top class – I can’t find a single blemish or give away which shoes (freudian slip) excellent technique……..(care to share the method??) :PAliParticipantThanks C :) definitely a case of letting my mind roam.
Thanks Ross, i’m afraid the selection was very much trial and error. It’s not perfect, there’s a few edges that i’d readdress if i was to print large. The problem was that the background was initially gray. I used the selection tool with various tolerance to get a decent mask as i couldn’t get a decent mask on a channel, even varying the levels. Good to hear you like it.
steelydanParticipantI actually Like the photo, just because it is different and I like looking at the way peoples minds work in photography,What do they see etc. As for Jb7’s points, all very valid even if right or wrong. But its interesting in whats pointed out, because it makes someone that knows sod all about fashion, to read, then look at the photo in a different way.But the bottom line to me always is.”If I like It ” then thats it really.Sure some things can be improved, but the original idea in the first place needs some praise. Well Done Ali
AliParticipantSodafarlMemberAli I like the shot the only thing I don’t like is how the shoe appears to blend into the dress a lighter dress or shoes may have made a difference. But what do I know I also thought the heels were down the front of the dress.
Don’t know if tis makes sense to you.
SodaAliParticipantThanks Sodafarl, the shoes are in the corset :D. I think more contrast between the shoes and corset would be good alright.
