There are lots of things I really like about this shot. It’s sharp, well exposed, nice conversion and tones. Compositionally the eyes are in a pretty sweet spot in the frame and there are no horrible distractions in the background. For a first shot, technically it’s very well delivered. But with all the positives, I just don’t like the shot. It’s completely subjective and down to a matter of taste, but there’s nothing in the shot that grabs me. For me, the biggest thing is the flute.. I’d much rather the portrait of the man alone without the flute. Have him engage with the camera perhaps? Also crop wise, it would be better to have the whole hand in or not at all. Cropping half of it off doesn’t feel right. I’m sorry i can’t offer more advice or be more specific about what I don’t like or how I might suggest to improve it.
I agree with Ciaran that it is well composed, but to work as a portrait I would like eye contact for a start. You could try including the instrument as an accessory rather than it being played by the subject, then it becomes less dominant? For instance he could rest it on his shoulder, or hold it some other way without playing it and then look directly into the lens. Imho that would make it more of a portrait of the subject.
I really like the b/w conversion and the toning – well done!
If the guy is musician and play on the flute, I think that the portrait of him could have the flute included.
Yes, technicaly good photo but I miss the full hand on it.
