Equipment Insurance

Heh everybody….
Maybe yee can help in here in the business section… I now have quite a few euro worth of camera equipment… PM and I will tell ye how much… Basically I have an ‘All Risks’ unspecified extra cover under my house insurance which covers any single item up to 2300 (I think…). That would cover all single items in my bag except for one body which cost more.. Also when I ask my insurance people if my entire bag was stolen would it be covered as a single item or would the entire contents be covered separately, they always give me a hesitant yes…! This worries me a bit. Also I am now making a few quid out of this equipment and they will not cover me if its commercial at all. I have rang a couple of brokers for a seperate policy for my equipment but they dont seem to be able to find anything. I know I could just search the net for some foreign policy but am just curious how you guys have your equipment covered or if ye have at all….?
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers
Richie

Na seriously if thats what it costs I might have to do it except will that cover the equipment if its used commercially…?

ThorstenMemberProfessional Photographers the length and breadth of the country would be unable to practice without insurance cover, including equipment, public liability and in a lot of cases, professional indemnity cover. Most of the professional photographic organisations offer insurance as a benefit of membership. I understand that Irish members of the SWPP can now benefit from a deal that has been made between the SWPP and Towergate Camerasure (underwritten by Lloyds).
RobertoMemberRobertoMemberThorsten SWPP offer insurance through PNI but in UK only, if I understand correctly.

Not anymore! At least not according to the Towergate rep. that was present at the SWPP trade show in Dublin three weeks ago. And he assured me that they also insure part-time professionals as well. I am waiting to hear back from them with a quote for me.
GCPParticipantWe in the IPPA have a special insurance scheme. You can have Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, Equipment Cover in studio and location, health insurance. In fact the rules of membership now state that one MUST have, (?6.5million is recommended), public liability insurance and many of the places we work in such as churches and hotels at weddings, places that never had insurance issues before, are now beginning to seek proof of cover before we are allowed to work there.
The way life in Ireland has gone one would be mad not to have professional indemnity and public liability insurance as a minimum if you work as a photographer.
Did not know you could go outside the country for insurance cover for inside Ireland………when did they change the rules?
ThorstenMemberI was aware that insurance was one of the member benefits of the IPPA but did not mention it because it’s only relevant for full time practicing professional photographers. Regretably (some might say thankfully!) the IPPA do not permit part-time or semi-professional members (but the SWPP do).
I’m open to correction on this, but I don’t think there is anything from preventing “foreign” insurance providers from coming in to Ireland and offering their services here – they simply haven’t done so yet because it’s not profitable for them to do so. I’m still awaiting specific details from Towergate Camerasure. However, it’s my understanding that one must be a member of the SWPP in order to take advantage of this insurance. As I mentioned earlier, I’m still awaiting specific details on the cover provided by them in ROI.
emotionalpoiseParticipantRegarding insurance: We took our studio to digital back in 1994… you wouldn’t believe what a 3 megapixel camera cost! Three years later it wouldn’t buy you a fry-up. Digital equip. is actually more like a consumable supply, like paperclips and masking tape. Don’t waste your money on insurance.
photobrianMemberActually I am a member of the SWPP and in December I paid for and recieved my certificate of insurance (PI) from Towergate Camerasure. It cost ?239.30 and covers me for up to ?110,000 for the year.
