50 MM Lens For D70
-
mgstParticipant
Hi All
I am looking to buy a new 50mm lens for my D70 either the f1.4 of the f1.8 some people seem to recomend
the f1.8 any thoughts or advice would be a great help. Thanks
MickciaranParticipantBoth of them are exceptionally good lenses and for the price, it’s just too hard to beat the 50mm f1.8. Unless you have a real need for the additional light, the 1.8 version is the one to go for.
mgstParticipantHi Ciaran
Thanks for your comment i was starting to lean towards the f1.8
Mick
ciaranParticipantI’ve had both.. I bought the 50mm f1.8 and after a year or so I upgraded to the f1.4.
From a lot of lens tests online, the sentiment seems to be that the f1.8 is actually a higher quality lens in terms of sharpness, contrast etc. For me, I personally prefer the f1.4 purely because it’s build is of a higher standard (metal rather than plastic) and as I just love shallow DOF, the f1.4 is perfect. But.. in most cases the f1.8 is the better choice.
mgstParticipantJust ordered one of the f1.8 and should have it in a couple of days and hope to give it a test run at the weekend
thanks for your input.Mick

You’ve made a good choice. These have been posted before, but here are some images from the 50mm (both 1.4 and 1.8)
Noelyf also started a thread on the 50mm f1.8 and posted some amazing examples from it:

Noely FParticipantIts a great lens, especially useful now in the winter light. Helps with your composition skills too
absolonParticipantI was waiting for the 50/1.8 for a month – until today. I’ve lost my patience and bought the 1.4. I can say, this is the best 300 I’ve ever spent. Before using this I didn’t realize how good my d200 was… simply stunning. The problem is, you get addicted and you will sleep with open eyes and with that lovely shutter noise bouncing in your head :)
