I think it is the caterpillar of a moth of some sort. We used to call them hairy mollies as kids. They used to be great for racing.

Basically racing hairy mollies involved making a number of lanes on the ground using stones, earth, cardboard or what ever was a hand. Putting the ‘competitors’ at one end and waiting to see which one crossed the finish line first. ‘Steerage’ and ‘guidance’ (poking them in the right direction) was often needed to get them to finish.
