Travel restrictions & cameras (return journey from Londo

Does anyone know how Ryanair are currently implementing security restrictions
with regards to carriage of camera equipment on board aircraft ?
I’m going Knock->Luton->Knock in early December and I want to bring my
D200 and a small selection of lenses in a neat Lowepro backpack. Has anyone
had recent experience where they weren’t permitted to carry such equipment
on the aircraft and instead pack it into the hold luggage section ?

    Thanks in advance,

    –Ian

    HI
I FLEW OVER FROM KNOCK TO CROATIA THIS SUMMER (HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, BEAUTIFUL PLACE).
THIS WAS JUST AFTER BOMBS IN LIQUIDS SCARE!!!, I ASKED AT DESK IF I COULD BRING ON THE CAMERA AS THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS CHECKING IT IN. I TOLD HER IT WAS VERY VALUABLE AND I DIDN’T WANT IT DESTROYED.

SHE SYMPHATISED, HMMMED AND HAAAED & SAID NO PROBLEM BRING IT ON WITH YOU.
NO PROBLEM GOING THROUGH SECURITY EITHER… BUT HAD TO TAKE OFF SHOES (IN KNOCK, RIDICULOUS)

SO, I DONT KNOW IF I WAS JUST LUCKY WITH CHECK IN GIRL OR NOT.
    HOPE YOU GET THROUGH OK.
MAYBE YOU SHOULD RING THROUGH IN ADVANCE & ASK.

What’s up with your caps lock there?

    It’s Knock. It’s your charm. It’s a charmed check-in girl. :D

You were possibly lucky, clawless, as I traveled through Luton on the day after the same scare and there was no way they were going to let me take my 20D with 17-85 and 580EX flash (all packed into a neat & small camera bag) into the cabin because it was electronic equipment. I was given no option but to check it in, in what otherwise would have been my cabin baggage (small backpack). I wasn’t impressed and they put a ‘fragile’ sticker, which of course unpeeled itself in transit. I’m thanking my lucky stars that it arrived unharmed.

We’re some ways off the restrictions imposed back then and cabin baggage is allowed again, so there shouldn’t be a problem but I’d advise to check with them in advance just to be sure.

Well…you have to see though as to where they’re coming from with it all being electronic equipment.

If anyone is concerned about film and xrays…

If you still need to know Ian!
You’ll get on board with a mini-trekker or smaller. Just can’t have any liquids in it.
Gone are the days when I’d bring on a mini-trekker set to explode it had so much in it, and a 500mm in a soft case, and a laptop!! Now it’s all in a peli case checked in.

    I’ll bet!

Probably not the best choice of words for the check-in staff either is it “yes miss, I’ve only one item of hand luggage that’s set to explode with tons of stuff in it…”

    I’ll get me coat.

Does ‘liquid’ include your Liquid Crystal Display?

Recently flew to Birmingham, brought the D200 a 28-105mm and an SB800 flash in to the cabin in a small rucksack.
Had to remove shoes at security!

Im travelling from Cork via Amsterdam to Montreal in Jan and intend on bringing a whole load of stuff with me in the cabin.. Cos if it’s going in the hold, so am I. I have heard that security in UK airports is insane recently, that might go someway toward explaining the above. Im going to have to contact Aer Lingus and KLM because I’ll be pushing the limits both where size and weight of hand luggage are concerned.

However, last time I was on a plane (just after the bombings in London), I brought a mid-sized tamrac backpack with me without any problems. Lets hope it’s the same story next year.

It’s a while back (after the security restrictions came in though) but I was able to carry on a small Lowe Pro bag with camera and 2Xlenses. It took a little bit of convincing at the security gate as the bag was a small bith thicker than regulation, but was way under the height and width limits. With a smile and some polite charm, there were no issues. Even though I haven’t carried a camera since, on subsequent journies the security has appeared less strict.

During the course of my move, I’ve been back and forth five or six times in the last two months (mostly by RyanAir, some by BA) and I have not at all had a problem bringing the camera in my Lowepro backpack. Not one question, straight through every time.

When i recently travelled to Budapest I had the 5D and one lens in the hand luggage…. no probs at all… on the way back the same thing wqas in my bag with a small Hama tripod that i bought… they stopped me in Budapest and I shit myself thinking they would take the tripod…. funny thing they didnt care for the tripod but where extremely concerned about a small Christmas tree decoration that looked like an arrow head throught the xray… I had bought about 30-40 of these decorations and all where wrapped individually in brown paper…. that was fun…!
