I hesitated before giving this a title as I didn’t want to colour people’s impressions. In previous shots, the cropped chin was hidden by the subject holding their hand to their mouths as they smoked. This one there’s no hand. but it’s breaking the cardinal sin of cropping at the chin. Does it work? One more and I have the panel of six
JohnParticipantCiaran I am starting to become insanely jealous
Personally I prefer this one to the others in this series.
The colour and expresiion are just right for that broken nose.gerardkParticipantThat is a hell of a nose – the chin wouldnt bother me specially considering the prominence of the beard. As well as that I think the character in the face (looks like he has been at sea for about 40 years) and brought out in the processing carry it over any thoughts of the chin crop imo.
AliParticipantIt sooooo works and you know i love this panel. They are similar in so many ways but the characters set them apart which is what i love :). Again, consistent and technically spot on.
CianMcLiamParticipantAnother cracker! Where on earth do you find these people :) Somehow I dont think you bump into them outside a wine bar on Leeson street!
Is it just my eyes or is there a tiny hint of camera shake? Reminds me I umst tge ym esye tesedt :)
AllinthemindParticipantWho gives a hoot about cardinal sins.
Exposure and contrast control are nailed. The expression is interesting. Because of the ciggie in his mouth, the chin crop is a bit “tight” for me. The whiteness of the ciggie pulls it forward in my attention and it’s sitting in a bit of a dead zone. He’s gazing off camera and I would rather have seen him composed differently although I’m aware that this wouldn’t fit with your panel.
All best
Si
ciaranParticipantThanks everyone :)
Cian, I find them in pub doorways :) This gentleman was frequenting O Neill’s on Suffolk Street. I did try lurking around some Leeson Street wine bars, but the clientelle just weren’t as interesting ;) There is a hint of camera shake too (roll on my 70-20mm with VR). For every shot in the series the lighting has been poor. Shooting this at ISO500 and at f2.8 the shutter speed was still at 1/30 so it’s marginally soft.. like the others :(
Si, I’m not sure where he’s gazing. Out of all the characters I’ve shot so far this one seems to have had the greatest fill of beer. So he was gazing anywhere and everywhere. If you have suggestions on composition, I can email you the original and you can have a play :) I don’t think each and every shot has to be composed identically.
Thanks again for the comments (John, Ali, Gerard)

Had a good look at this last night and again this morning before making my mind up, and this would be my favourite one so far, despite the chin crop. Whatever it is in your subjects expression, I just find this one the most engaging of the panel. The eyes in particular seem to have more life than previously, dof is superb and I absolutely love the post processing. There’s one small thing though that looks a little odd to me; the skin directly above both eyebrows seems a tiny bit smudged and greyish. It doesn’t take away from the image, but since I noticed it I can’t help seeing it. Definitely looking forward to seeing the completed panel.
Rob.
mgstParticipantpaperdollParticipantHave to agree with all the praise already lavished…love the colour, expression, wrinkles. Really like this series Ciaran, well done you :D

very nice shot..the tight crop in my opinion does not bother me………those eyes to me are what tell the story………and I am sure he has a bunch of them………the mind is a powerful thing and anything missing like the chin is filled in……you know it is there but those eyes draw you into the photo………
very niceJack_RyanParticipantnot a useful comment I know
but an image I like and I could see it on a magazine cover or maybe a budget supplement after the cigerates are hammered in a forthnight
ciaranParticipantCheers everyone. It seems the jury is out on this one, some people love it, some hate it and others simply don’t care. At the moment, I myself am in the “not sure” category and I think I’ll reserve judgement until I see it in print. Thanks again for the comments and feedback.
jb7ParticipantDefinitely one of the better ones, If he didn’t have a beard I’d be more worried about the chin thing-
the beard kinda replaces the hand in this one, and I can’t think of a reason not to include it, apart from the technical inspection- maybe a little bit heavily worked around the eyes, his left eye in particular- good luck with the set, I’m sure they’re gonna look like an impressive bunch. Any more thoughts about a title?j
David_SParticipantok i just want to put the cat amongst the pigeons here … and indeed i should probably have started a different thread as i do not want to hijack this one … but it is something i feel strongly about .. and didn’t know where to put it (so moderators feel free to move it)
while as i have said before their is much to admire from a technical standpoint .. i just don’t see anything here that pushes any new boundaries … nothing that has an individual ‘this is a ciaran’ feel about it …you know? .. and i think that is , for me, what i wish i could see in your work, as i have no doubt you are a gifted photographer, but i just don’t see the individual spark that makes a shot ‘yours’.
