Not sure if this is the right category but
Anyway, was out this afternoon to take a few pictures, the weather was a bit nasty, whilst cursing, walking back from the car i saw a rainbow appear. so i tried to capture at least a little of it
I havent done any processing to the image, only converted itfrom RAW in lightroom and saved out the JPG
I am not sure about th composistion etc, any help would be appreciated. I am a bit of a newbie really
so please tell me what i am doing either right or wrong

I see there have been over thirty views of this post but no comments
I am just starting out, so realy looking for advice
If the image is not good, please tell me (I am thick skinned)
well we all learn from our mistakes, so I am quite happy to be told what mistakes I am making
jb7ParticipantHey, thirty views is nothing,
some pictures go months-I think there can be a bit of a story attached to some of these boats, they’re quite a subject in themselves-
To tell the truth it looks like you’ve been distracted by the rainbow – and maybe the story was elsewhere.
In my opinion.I think it would improve the picture a lot to remove the blue crane and trolly to the right of the picture, and to crop below the waterline and at the mast- ( though its maybe a shame that the wheelhouse has been chopped on the left ).This would help concentrate interest on the boat. Exposure and colour and all the technical bits seem fine.
Whaddya reckon?

stcstcMemberthankyou for the advice
thats what i was really looking for
I agree i was distracted by the rainbow, and really tried to use the bout as a way to frame the rainbow
Although i did this at the same time, so i did notice the boats
again havent done anything to the image apart from convert from raw
thansk again for your feedback, it really helps
jb7Participantvery good Steve, much more interest than the wider one I think.
I hope you don’t mind me putting this one up-
though you probably have something like this too-
I printed this one quite large a while ago, up to 700 mm wide or so, and I think it works because of the large amount of detail in it, (Impossible to see here, of course)Now you get to have a go at my one-

I like it
I agree there is lots of detail in it. those boats are very cool. the other thing that is quite interesting down there is actually the colour of the water sometimes.
The only thing I am not sure about is those modern radio beacon things on the op of the boats, which is why i did the closer crop. I think they detract from the visual of the boat.
AllinthemindParticipantJust a couple of points. In the first picture, your horizontals, well aren’t :) Only a small point, but worth trying to keep the camera flat. Genrally, there is “one” point of interest in a photo with other elements to add context or balance. The first shot is confusing as to what the shot is actually of.
All best
