Sorry Mort, these don’t look right to me.
No. 1 just has too much flare and too much blown highlight. If the top of the tree had been silhouetted, you may have got away with it. You’ve got some crisp detail in the foliage, and some lovely colours in the sky. I’d say that you might have some better shots if you moved around and took a series of photos.
No. 2 looks like the lab spilt something on your film – I’ve refreshed my page in case the file was corrupted in download, but it still looks the same. Maybe it could go in the abstract section? I feel it might have looked OK in the original colour.
mortParticipantThanks for the feedback Pete. The flare in 1 and the lab disaster look in 2 (meant to resemble a light leak) were actually added to the original photos in Photoshop by layering and blending other photos on top. Why? I dunno – I just love experimenting and I guess I’m after some of the analogue look of film but with the convenience of digital. Taken to the extreme here I know but I’ve been admiring some Holga shots lately and love how the disasters can become part of the photo to create something new. I appreciate they are not to your taste.

I feel like I’ve been the subject of an April fool joke! I’m going to complain to Mark about this.
On a more serious note… maybe you should have put them in the abstract section?
dr_wolfenspielParticipanthi mort,
i actually like what you have done with these photos. cant really say why but i do. i love the colours and athmosphere you have created. its great to experiment. im at it all the time with some of my photos till they look more like a painting.
i must check out this Holga person.
KPMParticipantNot keen on the second shot, but I really like the first one. Sort of a biblical quality to it. Flare might be a bit blown, but I still think it suits the overall image, and I love the colours. Number one would be a keeper for me, number 2 not so much.

ValentiaMemberThere’s something about the first one that males it look like a long exposure, night shot. I like it too. The second could be a still from LOST. In other words there doesn’t need to be a logical explanation :o
dr_wolfenspielParticipantValentiaMemberPixelleMemberI tried #2 with the water as is and the greenery au naturel on the bank.
I like #1.LumpyParticipantexperimenting is the way to go, it makes for original work. It seems lots of people are following rules too strictly, so what if the flare is overblown, it looks really well in the overall effect on the image. I think they’re great.
BanjoParticipantpaperdollParticipantReally like the first one, and I guess your technique worked ‘cos I immediately assumed they were Holga shots!
mortParticipantAhh… relieved to see I’m not the only one with strange taste in here
AliParticipantI really like these Mort – there’s something mythical or mystical about them – almost fairy-tale like/borderline fantasy. Gorgeous colours. :).
