    Hi
Does anybody know how long i can print using an epson 4800,have heard it will only print up to 44in as the driver cannot cope with anything longer? I’m keen on setting up my own page templates for big print runs and find the driver supplied from Epson a bit limiting,
i’m also considering using a RIP software called Qi-Image that sorts a lot of my problems out but i’ve yet to download it to see if it will. Question is is there a more reliable rip out there thats not going to break the bank? Oh while im on the subject does anybody know what are the pixel limitations on CS2 as tried printing a 16x80in template at 300dpi and no-way will photoshop do it,will only drop it to 166.66dpi ….
    Cheers

    Hi Ben

I am not sure about the 4800, but I do know that my 7800 will only print upto 59 inches long, I doubt if yours would go further. You probably have to go upto the 9600 or better still 9800 (if you had the space and the cash!)
I don’t use any rips, I find for myself photoshop has everything needed. I have bought rips in the past, Raster Plus for use with a fuji Pictrography 4500, it was a total waste of money, I never use it.
Depending on the image and paper surface that you are printing on 166 dpi would be okay if the printer is set to 720, 1440 0r 2880 dpi. I routinely print large photos as low as 150 dpi with no loss of quality, as long as the printer is set to at least 720 dpi or preferably 1440 dpi. Interpolation can cause many problems.

    Hope this helps a little

QImage isn’t a RIP – it uses the standard Windows printer driver instead of having it’s own raster driver that a true RIP would have. That being said, it is an excellent piece of software and represent excellent value for money. I’ve heard people say that it does better than a RIP costing many times it’s price! I don’t know as I’ve never used a RIP but I’m more than happy with the results I’m getting from QImage.

As for printing that size at 300ppi – forget it, it’s not necessary to have such high resolution when you’re printing as big as that. Why don’t you download a copy of QImage and give it a try at that size and see wht you get?

    Hi again

Sorry I must have been tired when I answered this, the 7800 will print much longer, not 59 inches but apparently 590 inches!!! thats some 15 metres. I do not know what use this would be. So 80 inches plus is possible.

again sorry for the missleading info.

RIP = raster image processor, right? I had to look it up and think I got the right acronym, but figured I’d share.

Many thanks for the feedback guys
Have as Thorsten advised downloaded the trial version and its doin the business, wasnt aware that it wasnt a rip  :D Love the way it uses every inch of space and interpolates where needed, saving grace if you didnt have an action for those particular images. God knows why you would need anything else as its fitted most of my requirments, still cannot believe the price’s of the other rip software thats available..
