What type of photographer are you….??

I have never really classified myself as a particular type of photographer, and I do like to try my hand at most genres such as landscape, portrait, street, abstract, still life and sports. However I get most satisfaction from my portrait photography and generally I feel it is the genre I am better at, both from the taking and the processing point of view.
However I would aspire to be able to take landscapes like (inter alia) Steven Hanna and Andy McInroy. I hope to have some hands-on experience with them soon when maybe I will learn something. I also plan to go on a landscape photography course in 2007, somewhere like the Lake District or Cornwall.
Likewise, I would love to be able to produce street photography like Ciaran White, or macro work like NoelyF for instance. Basically I would like to continue learning and improving in all apsects of my photography in 2007.
I am wondering whether others see themselves as say landscape photographers with no interest in portraits or other genres, or whether they just stick to what they are good at etc? Take Steve D, (or Ming the merciless.!? ), for example, I dont think I have ever seen a portrait shot from you? Do you not do any people shots, or just no interest/opportunity for it etc?
Ali on the other hand, a relative newcomer to photography, clearly embraces a lot of genres and has produced a very eclectic mix of accomplished images. How do you view yourself as a photographer Ali? What is your favourite genre?

Lets hear from you all on this topic……?

Me no like labelling. For instance the other night I was at an opening of an exhibition that I had a photo in…and I was talking to someone I hadn’t seen in a good while, and they just asked me “but I thought you were an illustrator…?” and I was like….”no, I also take photos”….”so, you’re a photographer then?”

    Get my point?

I just love taking pics of anything, from nice views to silly things.

I have never taken photo’s of models and i feel awkward taking photo’s of the public as in street photography.

Basically i really like to take pics of something that will disapear or wont be seen again for various reasons like building or demolition or maybe an unrepeatable sunset etc.

When living in England i came across some old pics of a nearby town which was old stone and brick cottages some with thatched roofs taken uptp the 1930’s, that town now is all high rise tower blocks etc. So i like to think that some of my pics may capture a similar scene before it has gone forever just like the fella in England did all those years ago.

Does that fall into any catagory???????? :)

Well since I’m still learning how to use my camera..never mind developing a style yet I’m in the don’t have a style yet category…though…I am attracted more to Street/Documentary style photo’s like Ciaran’s and others and that is the style I would most like to master first.

But I like to look at all kinds of photography..portrait, landscape, nature and Macro. But I really do prefer those kind of pics where a look or an expression is captured in the turn of a second and when I take people pics…which at the moment is restricted to friends and family and work colleagues..i try to catch candid unguarded moments as best I can. These kind of pics are the ones that please me most :D

If I could get one brilliant photo, a photo that everyone agreed was brilliant, then I wouldn’t care what the subject was.

My problem is (self-confidence?) that I might not recognise it when I see it.

For me I think it’s way to early in my photography career to pigeon-hole myself saying I’m a particular type of photographer. But if pushed I tend to take Landscape (not as good as the guys you’ve mentioned) and motorbike racing, in 2007 I’ll also do running and cycling races. I’ve no interest at the moment in photographing people or portraits, that’s not to say I won’t in the coming months. Maybe the subjects are kinda dictated to me as I’m preparing a panel for my C&G Photography course and I’ve chosen a subject of Water or Nature, hence I tend to focus on these when planning a shoot.

So for me Landscape and Sport.

Interiors- Though I tend not to post work pictures on these pages.

Everything else- I’ll have a go at anything, and as long as they’re taken for myself,
and I think there’s a spark of interest in them,
    I might post them here-

I am happy to photograph anything and everything, that is except weddings! dark dingy churches, rubbish weather, mothers of both bride and groom experts (!!??) in photography, far too stressfull. Give me a studio, high key lighting and a bunch of two year olds to photo and I am happy, Or sport, interiors, landscapes, products, works of art, installation art or performative art. ANYTHING BUT WEDDINGS!

I mainly shoot people, always have and probably always will. Although one of the reasons for this is that I’m hopelessly bad at landscapes. I’ve taken some landscape shots in 06 and thought that they were reasonably good, but when I compare them to some of the shots posted here, mine really do pale into insignificance. So my problem is, if I want to get better at “discipline x” it means I have to put a lot more time and practice into it, realising my hit rate for good photos will be atrociiously low. Which is why I alwaye revert back to people where I think I find my results are better. At the end of the day I love photography, so I’ll continue to shoot anything and everything, but my focus will still probably stay on people in 07

People! I love people p[hotography, probably random walkabout street stuff mostly. I’ve tried landscapes, but always feel that they’d benefit from a nude woman in them :)

Animals and wildlife are my favourite and sunrise/sunset but would like to expand
into all aspects of photography, I think that when you know the basics the world is
your oyster and you should push your boundaries all the time, I plan on pushing my
boundaries tomorrow morning (when I should be home doing wifely things) I am sure
my husband will say ” your pushing it dear!” ha ha.

I’ll shoot anything I can when I can, but I’ definitly weak at portaits and Landscapes…conventional ones anyway. I’d have to go with abstract I guess.

I’m afraid I’m a hermit like introvert who likes boulders more than he likes people.

So it’s landscapes for me then.

But seriously, I find it hard to be inspired by other genres. I like looking at different types but don’t feel passionate enough about them to try. I do enjoy taking photos of my two young children but these are a more personal part of my photograph taking and I’ve never shared any online.

But landscape itself does have a lot more variety than perhaps people realise. From mountain views to intimate seascapes to macro landscapes there’s enough there to keep me busy for the next 40 years.
