The Ultimate Beginners Book?

What would the more experienced forum members recommend as the ultimate all round Beginners book on Digital Photography. I’ve been given a few Beginners books over the Christmas which were all good in their own way, plus I ordered Understanding Exposure which I’ve yet to delve into but looks really good.
The one book that has caught my eye while browsing the Photography section in Borders is The Digital Photographers Handbook by Tom Ang (mentioned in another post by Bertie). I’ve borrowed an older print of it from the library and it looks pretty comprehensive.
But is it the Ultimate Beginners Handbook? That one book that as you’re on the bottom of the learning curve you always want in your bag ( even if it adds considerably to the weight!).

I’m not sure that such a thing exists. Sure, there are many beginners books out there, but all of them try to cover a little bit of everything and I have yet to find one that does everything well. But my view may be a little jaundiced as I’m not exactly a beginner anymore after 20 years! My own recommendation would be to find books that focus on your particular special interest in photography, if you have one (landscape, portraits, still-life, etc., etc.). I think Amazon is always a good place to look as you will often find reviews from other readers and I find these quite useful and reliable.

I’ve bought a few of these “Complete Book of” type books recently..some good..some plain bad..and one that I’ve recently bought for the magnificent sum of ?7.99 in the bargain section in Borders Bookshop is The Illustrated Digital Camera Handbook. I have been surprised by it firstly because of the cheap price for quite a hefty book (400+ pages) but also because it covers things that some much more expensive books do not such as a basic run through on how to use all the different kinds of add on filters and which are the most important ones for a beginner. Good book for the novice anyway :D
My recommendation is the latest version of “The 35mm Photographers Handbook” written by Julian Calder and John Garret. I think it’s now in the 3rd edition – probably now called ‘the digital…’. It was published under Pan/Marshall.
The reason that I highly recommend is that it comes in a plastic semi-hard cover so will take a lot of abuse and referencing in the field. Like so many beginners books it has a technical section (how cameras work) and then suggested projects section + how to organise the workspace at home.
