Simple b+w image, taken handheld. Converted in CS2 and increased contrast.
Thanks
MarkPositive PressureMemberHi Mark,
I like this shot, but I took the liberty of doing a quick edit to boost the global contrast a little further by HIRALOAM (High Radius Low Amount) sharpening. Please let me know if it’s helped. :)Here’s how:
I duplicated the background and applied USM at amount:10, radius:100, threshold:5 to this layer. I set the blending mode of this layer to darken and made a duplicate of it. The blending mode of this third layer was set to lighten. This gave me an over-sharpened image with excessive light and dark haloes, but that’s not a problem; I just held the shift button down and toggled the up and down buttons (making adjustments in 10% at a time) to adjust the opacity of each of the sharpened layers to belowthe points where the haloes became noticeable. Since our eyes are more sensitive to changes in light areas than dark areas, the layer set to lighten blending needs to be lower than the darken blended layer. I set the lighten layer to 50% opacity and the darken layer to 80%, but as always, USM settings and opacities should be set to personal taste.
I used HIRALOAM sharpening to add form and depth, without adding ugly edge contrast. The second image posted shows how things might have fallen apart if conventional USM was used rather than HIRALOAM.
MarkKeymasterThats great, I like the increased contrast.
I’ll give your method a shot. I’m only able to do a few thing in PS, so its nice to learn something new.
Brill.Thanks !
MarkRobMemberExcellent Mark. Lovely image, and PP’s edit has really help boost the contrast.
Rob.
PeteTheBlokeMemberThat little tutorial should be copied into the PS section.
Mark, I could have sworn I’d seen this picture before from you, so I looked back through a load of your old posts. I’m afraid it didn’t do you any favours because some of your other grass shots are much better in my opinion. I think this one is more about a contrast between two textures and, as such, is an abstract image. For me it lacks oomph. Sorry.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantI have to like it because it reminds me of a (copy!) painting by Van Gogh which hangs on my wall in the living room. I think it is called Wheatfield. I have converted it to mono for display here:
MarkKeymasterNo worries Pete. Only took it a few days ago while out with the kids.
You’re correct in that its about contrast between sky and grass, but not sure that is an abstract (least
of my worries anyhow ie the genre). I’d agree that it missing something thoughRoss: I’m about to cut off my ear ;)

If it’s good enough for VG………..earthairfireParticipantGreat shot, really helped byu those tweaks in PS.
Never heard of HIRALOAM before (never knew it had a name, anyway!!)
Tim
Positive PressureMemberCheers Mark,
Glad to hear you liked the contrast tweaking. I forgot to mention that I like the shot; regardless of whether or not it taken under the influence of absinthe! :)Peter
