Hi Asterix,
Of your 2 images, this one stands out as being the best. You have captured some nice light in the sky, although I would say that the clouds are not quite stong enough on their own to hold my attention for long. The landscape below is lost in the murk somewhat.
Perhaps the biggest technical problem is the skewed horizon which is a most basic flaw. In this digital age, there are no excuses for this. I suspect that deputy Carl is going to have to have words.

AsterixParticipantyep, most get myself photoshop soon. just feel like its cheating a bit…although for cases like this it would help alot!
cheers for your commentasterix
andy mcinroyParticipantAre you saying that it looks like this in real life? Rest assured that the horizon police allow you to cheat in this case.
It is obviously best to get it right first time. But for horizons, even a fraction of a degree out can result in a necessary correction. I use a spirit level but still need to do a level from time to time. Bendy horizons caused by lens distortion are another no-no which are a bit more subtle but should also be corrected unless it’s done all guns blazing with a fisheye.

jb7ParticipantCheating?
Sounds like the start of a new thread-
A little bit of a heavy handed and unjustified allegation, in my opinion,
unless one’s vision terminates the moment the mirror flips back down-You don’t necessarily need photoshop for rotation and cropping,
and its these presentational elements that this shot is lacking-Maybe some of the PC users could suggest a basic freeware package?
You can’t be using a Mac-j
AsterixParticipanti had a feeling the ‘C’ word would ruffle a few feathers! no im not using a mac, im just using new camera and haven’t ventured into photo editing yet..for that same reason i lack understanding on the subject. just wanted a bit of c&c on the shot….not so much how i can edit it. On that topic could ye recommend a good editing programme i could get then?
Cheersandy mcinroyParticipantPicassa (free through Google) might get you started. It’s a good image management tool which can handle RAW files and gives some basic image editing functionality. Photoshop elements is cheap and might take you up to the next step. I belive it now offers the “curves” fuction which is a very useful tool.

Any c+c you get will most likely pick up on the points mentioned already-
They’re really basic things that get in the way of actually viewing the shot,
and so easy to sort out.If you take the presentation seriously,
then people will be forced into actually looking at the content-j
Brian_CParticipantI agree, of the two images this is the nicer, lovely atmosphere.. But I think it really needs something in the foreground to hold my attention. Something like a fishing boat or if there as some rocks, grass or flowers close to you it could really catch the eye. I also think it needs the saturation upped a little too to beef up the colours.
Astrix don’t worry, I’ve been caught by the horizon police once or twice before, I have a tripod but it don’t have a spirit level (I will get a tripod with spirit soon) and it does take from the final image.
AidyParticipantNice shot Asterix of a location I’m very familiar with. I agree with the previous comments – it would be a shame not too fix the wonky horizon which distracts from a good image.
