Last of their kind

freshphotoParticipantBethscottParticipant
Hey fresh,
I really like the last one, his eyes look so sad, the fine detial in his beard, dirty jacket, his skin condition says a lot and i love it. First one would attract me more if his eyes were open. This is purely because I love the eyes and in a portrait image they are usually what draw me in. Middle one again is great. Like the fact that I can see the rain on the window and the dirt on his jacket, have you got the last one in colour too? Might show up his hair and jacket more. Is there a story behind them?
Anyway can’t comment on the technical side just one person’s view!
LoGillParticipantReally lovely stuff.
I agree with Beth that the first would be improved if the eyes were open.. his expression says they should be IMO. I think your conversion is spot on, with lovely depth and contrast but the colour shot steals it for me.. the texture and ruddy complexion. My only recommendation might be to crop closer on the left bringng him fuller into the frame.
Great charachter and very very nice shots :)

dublindaveParticipantLovely work.
The first two remind me of the guys who used to “park” the cars around Parnell Square back about twenty odd year ago.
Dave.
DerekLavertyParticipantDramitic, character images here Fresh, I think the last one is by far the best. The first one is a good image, as has already been said I also would have liked to see the eye’s open. In saying that, if image 1 was in a series I think it would work very well indeed. I like the “grain/noise” effect you have acheived in this shot. Was this due to a high ISO or tight cropping of the origional image? Number 2 doesn’t work for me at all. I’m not saying it’s not good, just I prefer images like these in black and white. It’s a purely personal thing and I don’t mean to knock your work in any way. For me number 3 is by far the best , I love the image it portrays. To me it say’s a hard working ,tired and fed up man. The solom stare, almost puppy dog like stare, It really says to me ” I’ve had enough of this”. The deep furrows in the subjects brow, the dirty weather proof coat. It all just comes together fantastically. Not just so much grain/noise in this image but a definate favourite for me. I like the way you have used the natural light from the window in all three of these images. I have no idea of their occupation but image 1 reminds me off a skipper of a fishing trawler looking for a decent catch, image 3 reminds me of a fisherman waiting to get back on deck but wanting to be at home with his wife and family in front of a roaring log fire……..
Well I think I went off a bit with that one…. lol
Better go before I get banned from posting………….. lol…. :D

SwordieMemberPrefer the two B/W ones, especially the first one.
Like the eyes closed. You can only imagine what he is thinking about.elludeParticipantSome nice shots indeed, I like the lighting and grainy feel to them all. The only thing I’m wondering is what ‘kind’ these guys are? My first thought was they might be railway workers, but as they aren’t closing the railways just yet (as far as I know) that must be wrong. Are they on a ship? Fishermen maybe (but then they wouldn’t be wearing those official looking caps)?
freshphotoParticipantellude, ur right first time they are railway workers, but of a different sort a dying breed, steam engine engineers actually and they maintain and build and drive steam engines still in a lil town called dromod, incredible that this little gem still exists in ireland a part of a dying breed, thats one of the things that photography gives us that nothing else can, a way of recording stories in images that will be there forever.
The fact that u wonder makes the job worth doing in the first place. thanks
RobMemberTerrific character shots. The closed eyes in the first don’t bother me in the slightest and the conversions on both
black and whites are superb. I’d be in agreement with Lorraine though; the colour one steals the show.Rob.

You mean “lock-hards”, Dave!!!!!!
BeastParticipantLove the two B&W ones Gerry. The 1st is way out ahead on it’s own imho. The closed eyes make it. The 3rd one is a cracker as well, with th efaraway look in his eyes, but it doesn’t show what he does as well as the 1st. Looks like a shot that could just as easily have been taken on a trawler.
KUTGW!
