Christmas Portrait (C&C)

It would be nice to see a higher resolution cersion of this one. I think the model looks a bit nervous or maybe about to break out laughing ? I like the bokeh’d tree in the background and in every technical way it seems fine, lighting, composition, the angle too seems spot on. If the model was a bit more comfortable in front of the camera it would be a stronger shot but still a nice job. Out of curiosity how was this one lit ?
FreeAndPhotographyIrelandParticipantThanks Ger, I have attached two larger versions of this. As for the ever suffering model/girlfriend..it is getting harder and harder to get a photo where she is smiling as her patience with me and the camera wore thin long ago. It is becoming something of a personal challenge…
As for lighting, 580ex speedlight bounced of the ceiling as well as the standard ligthing in the room at the time

earthairfireParticipantI don’t think smiling is necessarily the right look to go for, but would agree this has the making of a cracking photograph, if only she looked a little more relaxed.
I’d be tempted to flick up the catch light card on your 580 to improve the catchlight in her eyes.
Finally, maybe a little to tight a crop – the hairs on the top of her head are slightly cropped – I think it may have been better to give a bit more room around her head?
Just re-read my post. Sounds all negative, and it’s really not meant to be – I think it’s a great job, but could have had that WOW factor, with a couple of really small tweaks!
Hope it helps!
Tim
ThorstenMemberTim – I don’t think there’s anything negative about the points you’ve made. They are all valid and should all help the OP (he doesn’t give us a name  ) I too think this image has potential. It’s the expression that bother me the most, but having read the OP’s second post gives me an indication as to why she has ssuch an expression. Maybe the solution is not to try so hard the next time – after all, there are some great images in the OP’s web gallery!
FreeAndPhotographyIrelandParticipantThanks Earthairfire and Thorsten for the replies, as Thorsten said all the points made are valid and taken on board, its nice to hear whats wrong/disliked about an image rather than just it nice…i like…
I do agree that the expression is what lets this down but hopefully relaying these comments may allow for better results the next time…I do not think that I did any cropping on the top in post processing but if i did i must look into changing it. As far as i remember I had the card up when taken but I agree it would be greatly improved with brigther more striking eyes…
And Thorsten, the name is Dave by the way – my username here deserves a prize for crappiest name me thinks…
