If it was to rain here …….well I would go shoot if I were not at work………

    :D

I like the shot and the conversion…….in my opinion a bit to much lead room……..but I do like it.

    cheers

Cameras are too full of electricity, that’s probably why.

I see you are addicted to these bird shots now. Don’t be shy about posting them in the nature section, though.

Is the swan set into asphalt? Or is that rough, dark surface caused by heavy rain on water?

I think it might benefit from a greyer conversion, but it’s a nice shot for all that.

Funny enough that was my first impression – that the surface was hard asphalt type! I thought Ciaran had managed to tempt this bird onto the streets of Dublin…. Is that a result of maybe oversharpening, or was there just so much rain that this result was hard to avoid?

    Ciaran,

I think this image is sublime. The harsh contrast between blacks and whites is really striking. A really keen eye to see this given the conditions. I saw this and stared for a while at the water, almost hypnotised by it. Its framed really well, simple and effective with nothing to distract from the amazing effect the rain is having on the water. It’s as if the swan is glued to the water. It almost looks like the swan has been stuck in oil slick. I like the conversion alot. Good work.

Ciaran your shots always impress and motivate me…

I love this, the DOF, composition – great.

At first sight, it did look like the swan was set into a tar like substance… or maybe an oil polluted river, which almost makes it a sad image. Only for the fact that the title is (very aptly named) “Alone in the rain” that it was the rain making the surface appear oily… (and I guess common sense that it’s a swan… it’s in water… it’s raining!!)

Great water texture! I can take a good guess at the inspiration for this shot. I just can’t remember the page number off the top of my head :-)

Everything else about this shot is pretty spot on, too :-)

Thanks for the comments everyone :) This shot seems to have split the crowd, people either like it or hate it because of the texture of the water. I was a big fan before I posted it, but now I’m not so sure?

Tim, I’m not 100% sure what you mean by lead room? Is it the empty space on the right or are you referrring to something else?

I know this is a shot of a bird, but I didn’t/don’t classify it as a bird shot, so I kept it out of the naure section. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a B&W or if I was trying to squeeze some emotion out of it? But this wasn’t just a study of a swan.. it was more a lone swan, grey day, rain etc etc.

Lots of people seem to be thrown by the texture of the water? I don’t think it’s a result of the sharpening, but it’s certainly a product of some post processing, mainly boosting contrast etc. Plus obviously just rain on water :)

Thanks Pete… looks like you’re in the half of the crowd that likes the water texture :D
