I’d have given the pillar a bit more headroom. And perhaps a very tiny clockwise rotation?

Too late now, but if I were taking the shot I would have crouched down a little so to hide that JCB behind the wall…

I thought that was deliberate, contrasting the statue with the modern busy scene of Dublin [?] 2007 beyond the wall. :!:

Sorry jools, composition really lets this one down imo. You should have got lower and closer – which would have the effect of making the statue (which is the subject after all, even from your own title) more dominant, and removing the distractions of the JCB and other buildings.
The burning of the sky has not been done well – there are white areas all around the edges where it meets the buildings and the chimney.

    Thanks for the comments.

I did want to show what was over the wall alright as I consider it a bit of a travesty when it is juxtaposed with a 17th century formal garden.

I did not do any burning in on the photo but I agree that the sky needs to be worked on. I will try to process the shot in a different way to see if I can improve the sky.

Dave….question…why do you burn in the sky anyway? Why not just add a gradient from the top or a filter?

I didn’t burn in the sky.

This is a different statue without the digger.

Did you do anything to the sky? Cos it looks burned in this one…(the top image)

The first one unquestionably looks as if the sky has been burned in. Are you saying that is exactly how it came out of the camera??

Dave the reason why I’m saying that I thought it was, was because around the tower on the right….looks like it’s burnt in (from the white space around it)

No I would not say that. I took three shots at bracketed exposures.

I then blended the three photographs and this sky effect was part of the result. But I did not burn in the sky (why do I feel like Bill Clinton?). I don’t like what it did to the sky either. You might say it was a software feature (as per Mr Gates).

2nd one is the shot for me dave. I’d be tempted to crop a bit off the LHS, but definately like the composition over the top one.

    Hi Jools
Its the second image which works for me,somethings are just best kept nice and simple, although the bush seems to quite dominant maybe more of a crop? Oh maybe my eyes are shot but it looks like you may have few dust bunnies on your sensor!
