Castles / Ruins / Dublin
-
Luke PortessParticipant
hi
bit of an odd one …. does anyone know of any good castles / ruins in or around dublin ? places like malahide castle are lovely (and i only know this one because i live in malahide !) but anywhere else a little more wrecked ? plus i need to be able to get to it very early morning or later in the day … for moody shots.
any suggestions ?
thanks for the help and sorry for always asking crazy questions .
cheers
lukeKPMParticipantHi Luke,
you could have a look at Swords castle. Not too far from you.
Be careful about use of a tripod on the grounds as it is usually marshalled by council workers. Not sure if you have ventured across the estuary to Donabate, but on the road into Donabate (Hearse Road) you could drop in to Newbridge Demesne and just inside the entrance, on your left, is Johnstown castle. Not much left of it, but you said you wanted ruins  . This is another Co Council run park so tripods are out of bounds !!
Regards
Kevin
RobMember… another old ruin near St Margarets, just off Kilshane Cross at the back of the airport.
Not the best area though with early morning traffic…Rob.
Luke PortessParticipantthat sounds interesting .. where is Kilshane Cross ? is it near kilshane bridge ? i can see that on the map …
cheers

lukeIt’s about a kilometre up the old Ashbourne Road (N2) from Finglas, first set of traffic lights you come to as a matter of fact.
Though I’m not to sure if you can get to it that way anymore now that the new N3 has been opened. I suppose just head
up the N3 and take the exit for St Margarets/Blanchardstown and that should bring you to Kilshane Cross.Rob.
dublindaveParticipantThere are some old ruins right at the bottom of Pigeon House Road, just before you get to the old Power station. Been a while since I was there but I was brought up in Ringsend.
Dave.

Not sure you’ll get a good shot out of those. But might be worth a try in the early morning.
An other place I could think of is the Hellfire Club in the Dublin mountains.
You find some info HEREand HERE, or just Google for Dublin Hellfire Club.If you’re willing to venture out a little further from Dublin: the Rock of Dunamase, also known as the The Acropolis of Ireland,
is a great and little known place to visit. It’s just outside Portlaoise. You’ll find a map HEREGood luck,
HaukedmgParticipantDrimnagh castle is well worth a visit. The opposite to a ruin though. has a working moat and all.
A bit further afield, King John’s Castle in Trim is very impressive.
ps anybody know of a good book on castles of Ireland or website?
Noely FParticipantThe one at St. Margarets is Dunsoghly castle. Its actually a fortified tower house rather than a castle.Great views of the surrounds from the roof and nice stonework on the adjacent chapel doorframe. 1500’s or thereabouts.
RobMemberGood man Noely. Couldn’t for the life of me remember the proper name.
Rob.
ExpresbroParticipantthis is it here. I pass it every day on the way home from work, but I didn’t realise it was open to the public as it seems to be on private land and there is a working farm surrounding it.
ExpresbroParticipantthere is also a tower in the Visitors Centre in the Phoenix Park which they only discovered when they knocked down the old building which had been built around it. :D
It’s nice in there and they do really nice lunch’s too
Plus look out for the free guided tours of the Aras when they start up..which also leave from the Visitors Centre.
EddieParticipantBective Abbey in Meath is a good spot. Have not been there for a while but remember it as agood panoramic opportunity. Other good photo ops nearby. I used infrared so cant post them but had a browse on Flickr so have a look at these to see if its worthwhile.

PixelleMemberFrom Google – Dunsoghly Castle: It is surrounded by a working farm and is not open to public. For appointment ring Office of Public Works.
Noely FParticipantI used to get the key off a person in one of the cottages on the road up……..but I cant remember which house
