English Market

Not my usual abode, this gallery, but I actually took pics of something that wasn’t musically related! Taken in Cork’s Old English Market. Kodak BW400CN Professional film. I hope to do this type of photography more frequently, as I’ve a hankering for it once again.
Anyway, feedback and comments welcome, as usual.
fstop89564ParticipantRodcunhaParticipantGreat photos you have here stasber, I really like the feel of each and everyone of them… well done!
earthairfireParticipantLovely “feel” to these.
Looks like the highlights may be blown on the later shots, but using work computer, so may just be this monitor!
The first is definately the strongest, in my opinion.
Tim
stasberMemberThanks very much everyone. I like their ‘feel’ too, so thought to see what others ‘felt’ about them :)

Yes I’d say they are, more to do with the original exposure. B&W film, scanned onto CD. Most of my images were just sharpened a bit, maybe a couple used some minor adjustment for shadow, but otherwise nothing. The last one is defo blown – but then it was pretty bright outside, so not sure how I’d cope with that – maybe given the overall fairly light mid tones across the pic, I could have gone -1 stop. Exposures were by light meter on a manual camera.

Maybe fill in flash? Obviously angled lo light up the room, and to not give a terrible reflection on the glass counter…

Mmm, not sure how it would work on candids like this. As I went around, I was only scuppered once (butcher making a wise crack to a customer who turned to look at me and wasn’t too pleased, so I went on my way) and then someone else getting ‘out of the way of the picture’ (you’re supposed to be IN it!! ). As the public can be delicate at the best of times, I think flash might reduce my chances of this brand of discreet voyeurism, as I don’t really want to draw attention to myself.
Still, it’s an idea – food for thought :D
Thanks Tim.
MarkKeymasterTim,
First off really good, I must pluck up the courage and head in there myself some day.
Second and this is hard to believe but you’ve managed to capture one of the site’s members
on camera. Andriy is in the first image in the background looking to our left.Whats the chances of that ? :)
RobMemberNice work Stas.
You’ve really captured the whole mood of the market.
The blown sections hardly detract from the images at all.Rob.

Hey Mark – my thread??
Wow! I believe the chances would be, err, quite remarkable actually!
I think Cork folk are starting to drift together like glacial plains by first communicating telepathetically, who knows, maybe in some years we might actually meet up deliberately!

Thanks Rob. First time I’ve taken this baby out in some years, and with black & white, too. First time using this particular film too, and I’m impressed at how clean & contrasty it is. Not bad for a first round with hand held meter. Gives me something to go on at least.
RestlessNativeMemberDid you just get the film developed / scanned at a shop? That is a C41 film yeah?
stasberMemberKodak BW400CN is colour negative C41 process, I got it developed in a shop, and opted for a CD instead of prints. I don’t know the resolution of the scan, though I’m told the largest size for quality printing would be 5×7. Can’t remember the pixel dims.
I figure this is grand as any pics I like I can selectively scan in at a later time and apply the same recipe to the new file, then print large, or get a better quality crop.
joolsveerParticipantGreat shots of a Cork institution stasber. It is years since I was there. It brings back the smell of raw meat and drisheen.
Do you intend to scan the negatives in the future? What scanner do you have? I am curious because I like to use film too.
stasberMemberHi Dave – thanks.
I don’t have a scanner at the moment and know diddly squat about these things. I have been thinking about getting one though, since my interest in film has perked up again, however, will give it some time to let the idea settle a bit as rushing on an initiative isn’t usually terribly productive further down the line. I will defo be scanning some from this roll in at some point.
