    Hi there,

    Long time browser first time poster with some shots from the Galway rally, my first with my new Nikon D80 18-135 Nikkor and Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro. I’m well impressed with the camera and both lenses. Has anyone any pointers to improve?

    Thanks in advance

    Doggy a great series of shots I particularly like No5. I was going to say you have your own style….. but no. :lol:
    Same camera as my self and I am very impressed with it and the lens. Unfortunately no pointers.

    You need to watch your foreground and background. Try and have no messy looking safety tape in the shot. With the portrait, watch the shadow from the hat…a bit of fill in flash will get rid of that. 1st and 3rd images are too messy for my liking, see first bit of advice.
    Last shot, composition wise is fine. The photo is soft though….therefore in the bin unfortunately. Again with the 4th pic, watch out for the marshals in the background.
    Shutter speeds, you don’t need to go above 1/500 for doing a head-on shot of any car really…rally, F1 whatever. This will give you a nice F8’ish aperture so its going to be easier for getting more of the car sharp.

    Thanks for the comments guys, very helpful. Certainly the F8ish aperture would help with the sharpness. Regarding the tape obstructing the shot, it’s a case of being more careful with teh vantage points…or getting myself a ‘Press’ bib!!

    Good photos, nice fast focus, exposure control and bright viewfinder on the D80 (Nikkor 18-200mm lens here) and while noise control is generally very good, ISO 1000 & 1/4000th seem very high for those bright sunny days last weekend, try setting the ISO to ‘auto’ on your panning shots for a larger aperture & better motion effect and maybe aim for between 1/500 – 1/1250 for head on pics, and then crop tightly around the cars.

    Here’s a few more from the Galway International (Nikon D80 also) ;

    I was at the same bend, for the first run through. Got to the other side of the road, and was able to lean out enough to shots without the crowd and get the action at the bend. It was a good bend. Here are a few of my photos from it. These were taken at a 1/1000s on a nikon D50.
