Tonight BPIC had a guy called Earl in for a studio session. Not a model, just a colleague of Gerald’s who was coerced by Gerald into being a ‘model’ for the evening. I thought he did brilliantly. Of course another bonus of shooting a male model for a change, is that it helps convince the bride that it’s not all about photographing pretty girls……..

C&C welcome. No edits of these images please.

Good work Ross. Fast too. I like your second shot. This is my best effort:

Please, please, someone do a black and white shot. He’s a great subject but it just doesn’t work in colour! There’s huge potential here for a really dramatic B&W image!

Apologies for that – but each time I clicked on Submit I got this message:

This is the only one I also processed in mono, but I will probably do it with a few more. I disagree about it not working in colour – I really like my first and second photos!

We’ll have to agree to disagree then

You picked the very image which I would have suggested as being a prime candidate for mono! How did you do the conversion? I think it could do with a bit more “bite” (contrast) to add drama.

    Hi Brandyman,

Really like these shots. No 1 is the pick for me it has real attitude and indeed for someone who is not a model he did a pretty good job. If I could just make a small comment on No. 1, I would crop to his hand as I find the hand and ring a bit distracting and take from the facial expression. Now it’s quite possibly a necessity to have this included for the shoot (ie. of some significance, wedding band perhaps) then of course it would have to be left in. Just my opinion but otherwise great shots.

It’s rare for me to comment on the studio stuff here but these are really great Ross. Both in colour and b&w. The model has character and gives the impression that he is not trying to be something other than what he is. The lighting is superb. The best compliment I think I can give is that you captured the person. And no makeup………I hope

Yup – I’d agree it’s number 1 for me too – love the composition. Not so sure on the composition of the others.

The only thing I’d be tempted to change on the 1st is to remove the ring – I find it too distracting. Other than that, I love the pose and it’s nicely lit, so great job!

I like the lighting on Drew’s shot in this series, makes me think I wouldn’t want to meet this guy down a side street at night :) ..And I’d like to see that shot in B&W too…

yes “ming the merciless” has been captured well and may i say it was all over in a flash… as he came straight from work though i think we could have done with a few changes of clothing to make the most of his evil looking side.. lol but well done for getting those shots up so quickly i was still leaving him home when u were processing..

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I might try some of the cropping suggestions, and will also revisit the mono conversion.

Thanks for noticing the lighting Si. I attended a workshop a couple of weeks ago – must give you the name of the presenter some time (lol).
What about the lighting on this one?
