I don’t like this but…

AllinthemindParticipant
The “Dance London” exhibition want to use this at Olympia as their poster (3 metres wide.. eek). It was taken during a tutorial (like most of my shots). There’s so much that isn’t right with it, just goes to show, Markets are fickle.

I actualy quite like it, and do understand why the twirlies want to use it. It has quite a nice serene mood to it and feels quite contemporary.
And most dance companies aspire to both of these things
Also when it comes down to it the public dont know and dont care about the rules of photography. IMPACT and presentation is what matters. An i think thats what you have caught
geraldParticipanti can see the graphic appeal it has and thats propably why they picked it and it may have been a designer and not a photographers choice… just a thought
terryMemberI can definetly see why it would appeal to a marketing company. It has great impact and although technically you are not happy with the shot it screams everything they are trying to portray. Congratulations make sure they pay you well.
Terry
RobMemberNow this really is interesting Si. You say there’s so much wrong with it…
Care to share your thoughts on that?I actually like it a lot, and can see its appeal immediately. The compositional
line, the extended arm almost bisecting the frame on the diagonal, is very
defined and leads the viewer immediately to the main subject, isolated
by light from above in a field of darkness and hard shadow. What’s not
to like?I may very well be completely wrong, but to me this is a cracking photograph.
I’d be well pleased had I taken it myself.Rob.
stcstcMemberHaving looked again at this shot
Having worked quite a bit with dance companies.
One of the things dancers do a lot is play with the light, like you have in the shot, they will move in and out of the light to create shapes etc.
The other thing about his shot is it works very well for poster type stuff as it has space to add graphics, type etc and the arm and face will frame that type of stuff nicely
those sort of poster things are not about the technically best photograph, there about impact and mood as i said before, and i think this shot does a very good job of it
ExpresbroParticipantI wish my bad shots looked as good as this Si. Hell…I wish my good shots looked like this.
I bet this will get lots of positive comment at the exhibition :D

8)AliParticipantSi, that’s SUPER news :D you have to get someone to take a pic of it for you so you can post it. Bet you’re chuffed XX
richiehatchMemberI think its great… Very very graphic image and can certainly understand why it choosen…! Well done..!
Richie
PippateeMemberI agree, this shot is immediately eye-catching and has fantastic graphic appeal….the customer got a good one with this!
AllinthemindParticipantThanks folks.. note to self, let other people decide which images work and don’t :)

one thing i realised recently here
Photographers are the last people to ask about an image for the public, photographers tend to be looking at the image fom a photographic perspective but the public aint gonna do that
So a great test is go ask the inlaws or someone, they will be frank and straight with you and you can see traight away from their face as to the impact
David_SParticipanti too am fascinated by the comment ‘there is so much wrong with it’ … and would love to hear what u think is wrong with it si.
i firmly believe too many people get hung up with technicalities .. missing the gut reaction a shot has with it’s audience
congrats sir :-)d
AllinthemindParticipantwrong with it, mostly techincal stuff (especially when they want it 3 metres wide). It’s cropped for that composition, again making the resolution iffy.
Many thanks guys, importnat lesson for me with this. :)
Never too old
Si
elludeParticipantThis is great! I can see immediately why the dance company would like it!
Simple, stylish, effective….
It will make a super poster :)
