Menacing portrait

Not Pete the blokeParticipant
I posted this in the middle of another thread but it may not get many views unless I post it in its own thread so here it is. I obviously went for a fairly contrasty mono conversion (using gradient map) and wanted to create a mood which matched the subject’s ‘menacing’ pose and expression.
comments welcome, particularly on the crop.geraldParticipantunfortunately the hand spoils the menacing effect u r looking for as it softens the overall look of the picture
SodafarlMemberRoss keep him at the door and no outsiders will get into your Photography Club. I think you caught the menacing look brilliantly.
A great conversion as I don’t think colour would have the same effect.
SodaHAPPIParticipantterryMemberGreat conversion but I agree the hand softens the ‘menacing’ pose. I think had he had his arms folded accross his chest it would have been stronger. All door men fold their arms accross their chests when they aren’t going to let you in, makes the LOOK bigger. Still a great shot though.

positronMemberWhen I look at this I see the ‘knuckles’ and get the idea (I don’t like the look of you!), but it first is a bit too far from the real focus of the photo in my opinion – his eyes, and the fact that he is actually feeling the color of his top makes it even less menacing! Yet, quite a tough look over all though!
AliParticipantReally like the conversion Ross and the shot is super sharp. The expression is fantastic (great model) – I’m not sure that he looks quite menacing though.
Menacing or not – Still like it :)Not Pete the blokeParticipantAli wrote:

Thanks Ali. That is one thing that has pleased me since I got the 5D. I dont know if there was a problem with my 20D or not, but I certainly have got much better results with the Canon 5D. I seriously suspect that my 20D had a focussing problem, particularly when I see the results that Cliff (ellude) gets with his. I sold a 24-70 f2.8 lens because I thought it was a piece of junk, but now I think the problem was my camera.
The guy who bought the lens thinks it was a bargain….. :lol:AllinthemindParticipantI’m with Ali on this one Ross. Eek re the lens. Focussing is critical with these new fangled didgital cameras isn’t it :)

GrahamBParticipantI’m going to annoy people here ( dangerous as a newbie )
I like the hand in the image.
I reckon it implies duality in the subject. His
eyes and face are menacing but the position of the hand
suggests a weaker less menacing side. I really like this
picture. All technical critism aside i reckon it’s a great picture.elludeParticipantWell he looks pretty menacing to me, lol. Nice shot Ross.
The 5D camera is certainly working very well for you. I know you’ve already mentioned that its got better focusing, but how are you finding it overall in comparison to your 20D? Do those extra megapixels make a difference? Okay, I’d guess there’s little doubt that image quality will be better – but slightly better or significantly better?
I’d love to try one sometime, but will have to start doing some saving first, lol.

for me, I am certainly getting better results which have convinced me that there was definitely a problem with my 20D focussing. I suspect there was a bit of ‘back focus’ ie the camera was focussing behind where the focus point was. So personally it has been a very worthwhile upgrade, and I love the large viewfinder best of all. I feel that it is the sort of camera that could literally stay with me for life (either mine or its lifetime….whichever ends first  )
From your point of view, if I was getting the sort of quality that you are getting, I would have no hesitation in keeping the 20D. For sports I miss the burst rate I got with the 20D, so I may try to pick one up on ebay if the price is right as a backup or sportsRoss
elludeParticipantHi Ross, thanks for that. I haven’t bought any new camera equipment for ages (well, apart from a second-hand point-and-shoot I picked up about a week ago and am having fun with since :) ). My 20d works well and I really enjoy using it. However, now and then temptation taps me on the shoulder and I’ve got to say that a 5d would probably be right up there at the top of my wishlist. The thing that always gets me, however, is the price – more than twice as expensive as a 30d. Arrrrrgh!
The other thing I’ve been toying with is getting something a bit better than the ‘kit lens’ for wide shots. There is a Tamron equivalent that gets good reviews but I’m not especially in a rush to change. The kit lens certainly has the cheap plastic look and feel, but actually works okay when i need it.
Now if the 5d was to drop in price….. well, I could definitely be tempted!
