Another shot of the Balladeer in Temple Bar from last weekend. Hopefully a more subtle PS edit on this one. I know he has his eyes closed, but I do the same when I sing and I always think a singer gets more emotion into their voice when they sing with their eyes closed. Well..that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it :D
ciaranParticipantMuch better conversion than the previous shot in my opinion. Exposure is great, especially considering how harsh and contrasty the light was. I think the eyes being closed doesn’t impact the shot in any way (negatively.. nor positively). It’s good and sharp too, so all positives on the technical aspects. The nit pick would be the fact that his hand is cropped off and appears magically from the outisde of the frame. As much of a fan as I am of tight portraits, I think if you decide to include hands, you need to include all of them.
GrahamBParticipantRobbie,
I much prefer this one, it just seems a more complete image.
i have to agree with Ciaran that the cropping is a little tight
but i do think this picture works a lot better.
Given the lighting on the day ( a lot of my pictures are blown to bits )
it’s a really good capture.Graham
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Lads!! Unfortunately, this is an out of camera crop..I had filled the frame when taking it…so can’t put the rest of his hands back. I was concentrating more on his face, but I wanted to get at least one shot with the instrument in as well. But that’s okay..because every constructive comment adds to my knowledge..and heaven knows there’s a lot to learn…
But sure is fun learning isn’t it? :D

8)GrahamBParticipantJust a suggestion but what if you crop even more.
Go for just a head shot.
It will probably take he guy of context but you might end up
with a good head shot of an interesting face.ExpresbroParticipantI’ll give that a go later Graham..might get another shot out of it maybe..but I kinda want the instrument in there in this shot…it’s as much about that as his face to me anyway. But it’s something I’ll try later…go for a portrait shot too.. Who woulda thunk it…I can get two for one now in a shot..must be getting better…

The obvious danger about cropping in this tight is loss of pixels, you’ll be pretty hard pushed to get any decent print size out of it if you throw away that much detail. I think if you want a close in head shot like that, you’re better off taking it in camera. The next problem I’d see is that his eyes are now closed and whilst I think it works with an instrument in his hand, for a headshot, it wouldn’t work. There are exceptions of course, but for headshots, I think its important to see eyes.
wavydaveMemberI have to agree with Ciaran. His eyes being closed is part of the story which would also include the banjo and if you have the banjo you need the hands. Love that expression…you can almost hear what he is playing!

mervifwdcParticipantVery Nice shot – however I agree with the cropping comments. The lower hand is ok, it’s just the upper one that catches me.
Exposure, sharp etc is super. First time on “walkabout”? Smashing stuff.
Merv.
