The long walk home

LoGillParticipant
I met with Davenewt after work and went for a “wander” last week. I took this near Christchurch while we were on our way to Johnny’s Holga exhibit.. (which is really worth a look if you can and on till tuesday https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=4761&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)
Any C&C would be welcome

ExpresbroParticipantReally well framed and spotted Lorraine. One of the things about street photography is that you usually only have a couple of seconds from initially spotting your subject to framing and shooting..especially when there is a person involved like this shot. Be nice to see a larger version as it looks a little dark on my laptop monitor. Again..the wall on the left looks very black and lacks detail..but I think it could be the laptop. On the other hand..I love the light and detail on the cobblestones. To me at least….this is what photography is..capturing a moment and freezing it..little stories in a single shot. I want to know more about this guy…where is he going..where has he come from..and what’s in that bag…

I can’t remember seeing a camera that night…I like the conversion,
good to see the streetlights reflected off the clouds-It looks like it could do with some rotation,
or maybe even some transformations to correct the geometry-
its very nearly there already-I don’t know what that man is wearing on his head,
but every time I look at him I think of Santa Claus-
that white band kinda jumps off the page at you-j
LoGillParticipantThanks Robbie
I probably tweaked the contrast a little too much in PP.. but I love the deep shadow, so its staying until i get tired of it ;)
I hand held this … using a wall to the right to steady myself .. .. Here is the full size version for inspection … not sure it will stand up ;) http://www.lorrainegilligan.com/misc/christchurch.jpg Tha bag is pretty interesting isn’t it ..:)
Thanks F-stop, It is a far from perfect shot .. but I really like the mood and atmosphere.. Its a keeper for me too :)
Hey – JB I had my baby tucked in my backpack – lowepro microtrecker.. big enough for the D200, change of lens, flash, filters, wallet, phone and lipstick ;) I have to admit I completely forgot to check the lines on this when I started ..  (I was working the weekend so too tired to think I guess ;)) I usually always do .. honest ;) – will have a play with that later.
I toyed with the idea of cloning out the white strip on the hat .. but was too lazy at the time to bother ;)
L
ExpresbroParticipantJust checked it out on my office monitor….and there is much more detail in the wall…so it was my laptop monitor. Looks great..and I wouldn’t lose thatwhite band on the hat.
RestlessNativeMemberI like it alright as it is
keep the band on the hat, this sort of photography should be documentary imho
is this shot with a 70-210 vr? did you use vr for a shutter speed that low?
LoGillParticipantCheers Robbie – Thanks for taking the time

Its shot with a sigma 24-70mm .. no VR other than the wall I leaned against and a few deep breaths :) very low tech

RestlessNativeMemberGrahamBParticipantI really like this. Considering it’s handheld it’s even more impressive.
carlParticipantNice shot Lorraine,
I like the way the lines in the cobble lead you into the shot including that contrast line coming from the bottom left corner.

davenewtParticipantYou know I like it Lorraine. Looking at it now, is the building in the background leaning a touch? [and no, I’m not picking on your horizontals/verticals just cos you picked on mine ;-)]
Anyway, this has forced me out of the woodwork to show you my take on the same scene…

Its definately askew.. problem is the buildings and lamp posts seems to be wonky all over the place so I can’t get a true vertical straight line.. have to look and see if I can get a horizontal :)
L
terryMemberHi Lorraine I know this area very well and I suspect you will be very hard put to get a vertical anywhere around the area. All the buildings around there are so old they are bulging on the sides and most of them need tie bars just to hold them together. My grandfather lived quite close to there and his house had a six inch gap between the front wall and the roof and according to the engineers and builders this was ok. We would look up his street and nearly get sea sick the buildings were so in and out. And where you shot your pic is no different.
Your pic brought back many memories for me thanks for that its a beautiful pic of Old Dublin as it should be.
Terry
LoGillParticipantThanks Terry :)
I’m glad this shot brought back memories for you :) Its a great area for lanes and alleyways, and finding a bit of charachter, I can’t wait to head back that way WITH my tripod this time, I was planning to go back after work today .. even the rain would make the cobbles so slick and lovely .. But I’m on the couch sick today :( Grounded for a few days .. Maybe next week ;)
