Tripod Recommendations

Okay..so I have my D80 and my Battery grip and my camera bag..but now my old cheapie Hama tripod is no match for it..so I need a half decent tripod to go with it…new or 2nd hand.

Any recommendations for a fairly robust (not all that bothered about weight…I’m hefty enough myself.. more concerned with sturdiness when used outdoors and general over all build quality.

My budget is not huge unfortunately…about ?150 to ?200. Preferably if anyone could recommend somewhere in the Dublin area to pick one up..with a website even better.

Like Paperdoll in another thread ..I’ve called into the Camera Centre in Blanch but they had a very limited selection and didn’t seem all that knowledgeable anyway…I know we have a lot more combined knowledge here anyway than any camera shop.

I’m looking for legs and head (Ball or Tilt and swivel..not sure what the advantages are) and a bag would be nice too…though not essential. I also like the idea of the hook on the centre column for hanging a camera bag for added stability if possible.

    Cheers

Sure does Thomas..thanks. I want to get a list of tripods and suppliers to look at then spend a day trekking around to pick one up. I’m such an obsessive when it comes to buying….always wants as much info as I can get my hands on…I drive people around me mad…hehe!!

Robbie, I’m in the market for a good tripod too so I would appreciate if you can let us know how you get on with your quest.

I swear by my Manfrotto 055 which is aimed at the advanced amateur / semi-pro.

On the Manfrotto you have a number of options:

Steel / Aluminum / Carbon Fibre construction – this is a weight consideration
Head – pan and tilt 3 way, ball, geared, quickgrip, spirit level fitted in each direction or not
      Feet – spiked or rubber
      Size – small or large

The reason that I bought my 055 was that the center column is unbraced which means that I total control over how I set up the tripod in terms of position and level. Also the center column can be taken off the tripod to set a 90dg to the tripod vertical axis, allowing further control over the set up. Manfrotto’s also have a quick release system that is of huge benefit if you work with more than one camera body.

Similar options would be available in the Glitz or Benbo ranges

One thing that you will need to beware of is that you will be priced quoated separately for tripod and head parts since they do not fall within the ‘tripod headline price’

Mine came from http://www.warehouseexpress.com (sic) but there are plenty of alternative suppliers.

      Happy shopping

I bought this Benro carbon fibre tripod: http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230083535682 and it is superb value, its fairly compact and light and gets high enough for most people and is also extremely stable. Bit over your budget but read this before spending: http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

I have a Manfrotto setup and really like it. However it sits in the corner way too much.

    I have a Slik 400, it was 115 euro

Its not light. But quite solid

One really nice feature is it has foam on the top sections of the legs, which on a winters morning makes a huge difference when you have to carry it.

I have recently bought a new head for it though, a manfrotto (which cost as much as the tripod, but that was more to do with having everything with the same quick release than the head being no good that was on the tripod

I liked your tripod actually Steve..little bit heavy I guess..but solid and seemed very rubust. I looked at one in the Camera Centre which was ?100..I think it was a 300D ..the guy called it a 30D but can’t find such a thing and he didn’t seem all that sure… :D

    yea robbie

you want at least the 400 if not the 500

some people turn their nose up at them because its not one of the main brands, but its is robust and does what it says on the box

Okay…after reading here and doing some online searching..just came across this one in Halls Camera’s in Talbot Street…

Seems like a decent tripod for the price?…any thoughts?

I think the 055 Manfrotto is a slightly better job. Its been mentioned already and is a favourite of most photographers i know. Check out DML they have the full range , they will have brochures. They are in Portabello beside the canal. You should only ever have to buy one tripod so make sure you get the best you can afford.
