C & C welcome…I know there is alot wrong with this shot…but being a novice I need some advise please! ..especially about the top lefthand corner of the shot…can anything be done in regards post processing and more importantly is it the iso (or what?) that i need to be looking at to avoid this when taking the shot?. Its very frustrating seeing a scene like this and not knowing how to avoid this unwanted effect. Thanks

    Never fear Asterix,

There are two ways to control contrast like this. The first is to use a neutral density filter over the bright part of the sky. The second is to post process to balance the exposure.

In the field, the most important thing to do is to check your histogram and make sure you haven’t blown any part of the scene. Thats a good start. Then if you find that you’ve lost a lot of detail in the foreground I would then add in the ND filter placed at a 45 degree angle across the top left. Positioning here is critical with the interface perhaps being placed along the cloud edge. Otherwise it will be a very obvious transition.

Then finally at home you can do a bit of final curves adjustment to bring out the shadows and supress the highlight.

    Hope this helps.
