Them’s some ugly cameras! Looks like vapourware to keep all the ex-minolta users from walking. Interestingly though there’s been speculation on the web that the ‘pro’ model will be full frame, if thats the case then Sony FF sensors would probably be available to Nikon, Pentax etc. for their own top end cameras. Interesting times ahead if Sony can bring the FF sensor down to economical prices.

    Interesting points!

If Sony do have a FF sensor in the wings, i wonder are they prepared to share it with Nikon, Pentax etc. Would they like to keep it for themselves to make their Sony FF camera more competative with Canon or share it and potentially dilute their FF camera competativeness. I guess it could boil down to their confidence in their FF camera or whether they can make more money from selling FF sensors or FF cameras? Remember Kodak?

Indeed it is interesting times… If I were Nikon I’d be seriously concerned over Sony’s intentions for there FF sensor. If Sony do impact into the Canon FF market why would they want to sell there sensors to Nikon, unless of course it’s a joint venture. The only thing Nikon can offer over Sony is there name in the photo market. I know Nikon are using the Sony sensors at the moment, but I think their flagship FF sensor could be a differant story. I’d be talking to other protential providers of sensors or start my own research.

I think Sony do quite nicely on Nikon’s coat-tails actually. How many times have you heard “The A100 is basically the same sensor as the Nikon D200 so it’s pretty much as good, BUT you can afford it”?

I’d expect them to market the same way if they did sell a FF sensor to Nikon: they’d let Nikon have the pro end and concentrate on the consumer end themselves (once they realise that no pro is going to be seen dead with a Sony ;)

Thanks SteveFE !! you’ve just totally confused me

I’ve been looking at what DSLR I should invest in as a better long-term option for sports photography…
I have the Minolta Dynax5D, I love using it, but the hi-end lenses just aren’t available for the minolta mount.

My father has a Canon 300D which I’ve used with an F4 300mm, but the Canon is nowhere near as good to use in comparison with the Minolta. So that has pretty much put me off Canon, plus I had one of their pocket digicams, again it was dire compared to a Nikon I had previously.

I’ve been reading about the Nikon D200 as a stepping stone to a pro standard Nikon body. I thought the D200 would be a good option as it has the weather sealing etc that the pro bodies have, but at a mid-level price… No I’m wondering if it’s worth the investment at all !

Sorry! I didn’t mean that the A100 is as good a camera as the D200. The Nikon’s in a different league in terms of build quality and handling. It’s definitely a semipro/lower end pro camera whereas the Sony is a consumer one. What I meant was that there was lots of chatter when the A100 came out about it having “basically the same 10Mpx sensor” as the D200, and I’m sure the less educated would perceive that to mean that it’s just as good as a D200.

Now now, people – I own a Sony A100 and can take a good picture (the camera in right hands, I mean  ). Saying a pro wouldn’t be seen dead with one doesn’t mean it isn’t a good camera. A pro is simply someone who gets paid for their trade, not what equipment they use.

Check the reviews for a Sony. Defining factors on face value seem to be that “…the Sony is noisier than the others”, “…the Sonys finish doesn’t suit my taste”, “…the Sonys start up time is .2 seconds slower than Canon” etc. There are real comparisons which say that at ISO 1600 there is more noise with a Sony. It has characteristics that make it unique.

I’m not falling into the offended corner but lets be real – Da Vinci created the Mona Lisa with what was effectively horsehair on the end of a stick. Lets see a photographer with a top of the range anything create something that will be spoken about in 400 years time.

BTW, the “Sony in the Glass” looks like a Lego set. Yeuch!
