Johnny and the Holgas,
If I created a critique forum just for Holga’s and other toy cameras would you use it ?
Thanks

MarkMark, as a non-Holga user I would be in favour of that. I like to dip into the Film Photography Forum every so often and will always check to see what’s new when I see there are new posts flagged. When I opened it earlier today I just ended up saying to myself “Not again…” I mean no disrespect to the Holga-ites out there, but I’m not a big fan of very old posts being resurrected over and over again particularly when it’s a niche subject, albeit a niche subject with a strong and healthy following, which is good to see.
JohnnyMcMillanParticipantWell sorry Thorsten, but I’m afraid I don’t see any problem in as you put it “resurrecting” a thread as you put it. I don’t see any problem in keeping a thread alive if there’s interest there. Fair enough if it was made into it’s only topic in itself (perhaps more toy camera based then just holga). But knocking something cos of it’s a “niche subject”…?
ThorstenMemberI wasn’t knocking it Johnny! Apologies if that’s the impression I gave. Look at it from my perspective. I’m on a dial up link because I can’t get broadband out where I am. This means that every page that I load takes seconds rather than fractions of a second (and occasionally longer). If I see on the main page that the Film Photography forum is gone from blue to red I know there’s a new posting there. Being curious, I go check what’s new in the Film Photography forum. I have to wait a few seconds only to find it’s another post on a topic I only have a passing interest in. I now need to navigate back to the front page, which can take another 1-2 seconds. This all adds up on my limited connection time.
If I was on broadband it really wouldn’t bother me that much. I’ve never posted anything negative about the Holga threads before. Why should I? I realise that photography covers a diverse range of interests and that a forum like this has to cater for all interests. Another forum that I’m a member of has a strict archiving policy – after a certain l period of time, posts are archived and can no longer be added to. Personally, I think that’s a good idea because it encourages people to keep the forum fresh.
Some time ago, I suggested that the Word Association thread be killed off for the same reason. When it wasn’t I just stopped visiting that part of the forum. I would hate to stop visiting the Film Photography forum. :(
I’m not asking for special treatment here. Just keep in mind that not all users here have broadband access and there are small little things that can be done to make the experience here a more enjoyable one for dial up users.
FlipflipParticipantSorry to sound like a prick, but thats a stupid reason. No disrespect, but its not our fault you cant get broadband.
I dont see the problem in keeping this thread alive at all. Its gotten to 8 pages for a reason. Theres huge interest in it.
But I am in favour of a toy camera forum too!

No need to apologise to me – I can’t help it if you come across that way!

No it’s not. But it’s not my fault either, and therein lies the real frustration – there’s not a damn thing I can do about it!

All the more reason for a separate forum then.
MarkKeymasterGuys,
Don’t want to hijack this topic as its a great one. I’ll start a new thread here to see how the Holga folk feel.
I have no intention of stopping this Holga post, just want to see if a Holga critique forum would catch on.
I think that having its own area would bring more attention to a style of photography which I love. Can have both this thread and a new area, no reason why not :D
Let leave any further discussion for the new thread I’ll create here in the Film section.
I might move this discussion into the new thread while I’m at it.Thanks !

MarkI prefer this tread or something similar, I like the idea of the photographs with as few comments as possible. Its like an abstract gallery of photographs with all our different styles, critique might just kill the fun.
MarkKeymasterOK Eddie, I understand where you’re coming from on the critique.
I definitely don’t want to spoil the fun :)If I can come up with a better idea for making the Toy camera work more visible, I’ll let you guys know.
Thanks
MarkMarkKeymasterFYI, I’ve taken these replies out of the ‘What is a Holga’ thread into here and removed
the one I had started. Don’t want to pollute the Holga thread with the question/discussion.Susie – I couldn’t move your comment in support for a Holga forum in here unfortunately.
Cheers
EddieParticipantWhile the Holga is the most popular camera for this style of Photography there are many other cameras used. We have Polaroids, Pinhole cameras , hand made cameras. A title or heading ‘Low fidelity photography’ is broader and might be a better heading.
FintanParticipantThe holga thread is probably my favourite thread on PI since joining up, long may it continue :D

There may be a need for section for pin holes, toy cameras, cheap polaroids, and other plastic junk shop cameras. I agree with Eddie regarding the critiques. With limited control over exposure, focus or even composition (the viewfinder doesn’t always line up with the lens) I’m not sure what advice can be taken in.
However, a place for questions about where to buy a lo-fi cameras, various techniques, camera mods, types of cameras, etc that allows us to be inspired by other peoples creations would be great.
jb7ParticipantThese images are all shot on medium format film,
it is the one thing that distinguishes them from 99% of posts elsewhere.Perhaps its a bit disingenuous to be labeling it ‘low-fi’
considering the quality that we know is possible to get from this film?It appears that nobody is really concerned about types of camera,
whether it be a Diana or a Yashicamat. As Johnny says,
‘its all about the process’-
and the camera is only one part of the process;
chemicals and scanners and computers and paper
are all equally significant-A thread system would make it easier to navigate,
though I can see the appeal in having one monumental thread. With the possible exception of davedunne,
who may still be trying to adapt a digital back
to use on his Diana,
Rollfilm seems to be the distinguishing feature in this thread-
That, and attitude-j
JokerParticipantI think a place for fun photos would be cool.
I’ll have to go dig out my Lomo
