    Fairly sure it’s a male Stonechat. http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/guide/s/stonechat/index.asp

About 40% of the original shot. Only unusual editing was to apply a lens blur to the reeds on the right. They were in focus and distracting.

I like it Aidan, although I feel in this case that the negative
space is not adding a whole lot to the image. The twig the stonechat
is perched on makes a very pleasing diagonal for a portrait crop of
this image. Simple dark stroke layer, a little more sharpening for
the web, and a plain white frame would make this pop imho.

Totally right on the portrait crop, Rob. The diagonal would be very appealing. I was concerned that I’d be cropping so much from the photo that it’d end up being un-printable.

What do you mean by “dark stroke layer”? I’ve not heard that one before.

A portrait format would look great Aidan, I think Rob means a black frame around the image

Yeah, just a couple of pixels, not necessarily black, but dark enough
to make it pop off the wider white frame.

How’s that? I had another look at sharpening but the halo monsters came a calling so I left it as was.

Swap them around Aidan, would be my suggestion. White on the outside
and thin (very thin, only a couple of pixels) dark edge to the picture
itself. As for the crop… way way better. A different image now.

    Luvverly! Exactly what I meant.
Now the question is, do you prefer it?
After all, you have to like what you’re doing
yourself or there’s little point to anything.

    Away outa that Rob,
    you’re the CropMeister these days-
everything you touch turns to gold-

    another good crop,
though its useful to have the original too-

And the crop does look a little sharper to me too-

If I was printing/framing I’d put a mount on it like that. But the image itself would be borderless.

This one is hanging in my sitting room (white walls, black furniture, fireplace matching): http://www.highwaycsl.com/Photography/Tanzania/Tanzania.htm I have a black mount (15mm set inside a white mount 30mm) in a 10mm black wooden frame. Looks fantastic. One of my fave shots that I took and the mounting really made it work.

This framing works too and if I had enough pixels, I’d print it like that. I’m thinking about printing a little book from one of the online companies for myself so I might print this one like that.

EDIT: the crop works. I only wish I’d been closer to the bird.
