Camera snobbery and the difficult questions
-
andy mcinroyParticipant
We’ve all had to deal with the difficult questions for friends/relatives/critics about our photography and kit. We often give detailed answers to impress but are they believed? Time to throw photographic snobbery to the winds and answer with unashamed pride.
Do use use you camera on “manual”?, No, I use auto modes
Do you manipulate your photographs? Yes, I do (and leave it at that and watch for the perplexed look)
Do you use autofocus or manual focus, I use autofocus, I’m as blind as a bat
Do you photoshop your images? No, I use Paint Shop Pro
Do use use a professional camera? No, I use the same one as youAny more

Brian_CParticipantDo use use you camera on “manual”? I use Sunset mode. Ah so that’s why people seem to look embarassed in my photo’s
Do you manipulate your photographs? In what way, Like the paparazzi?
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? What’s the differance, I let the camera do that. I just point and shoot.
Do you photoshop your images? No I print some and store the rest.
Do use use a professional camera? No it’s only an amatuer camera.GrahamBParticipantDo use use you camera on “manual”?, No, i lost the manual, i use a tripod
Do you manipulate your photographs? What are you implying
Do you use autofocus or manual focus, ? I told you i lost the manual stop asking me technical question
Do you photoshop your images? again are you implying i need to
Do use use a professional camera? It depends on who is holding itjb7ParticipantMostly yeses.
but I don’t think that justifies the accusation of snobbery-

MarkKeymasterDo use use you camera on “manual”? Yes when I need to use a grad filter or if I need to have full control over a subject in a high contrast situation (eg gull against black background), otherwise Aperture Priority
Do you manipulate your photographs? No (needs further definition of the word manipulate :) )
Do you use autofocus or manual focus ? AF unless its a macro shot
Do you photoshop your images? Yep
Do use use a professional camera? Nope, its just a box with glass attachedpete4130MemberDo use use you camera on “manual”? I use Manual, alongside Aperture and Shutter to suit the circumstances of what I’m shooting, whether DoF is important or a faster/slower shutter.
(I think the question of “Do you understand how to use a camera on manual mode” would be more fitting.)Do you manipulate your photographs? Almost everyone does, from the traditional darkroom to the digital darkroom and even 1 hour photo labs (they can change the CMY in your imagesand the density…e.g. Fuji photolab machines are setup to deal with asian/oriental skintones more than European/Caucasian skintones so some tweaking to remove people looking jaundis is sometimes required etc…)
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? Not very often. AF is usually faster and more accurate.
Do you photoshop your images? By resizing an image for web is photoshopping/digitally editing an image by definition, isn’t it?
Do use use a professional camera? It’s not the camera that you use, but how you use it thats more important.
RobMemberDo use use you camera on “manual”? No. I use mine on Saturdays.
Do you manipulate your photographs? Manipulate? From the Latin manipulus meaning “handful” or “sheaf”. Occasionally I make
several prints and place them one on top of the other. That may constitute a handful?
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? I use bifocals.
Do you photoshop your images? No, only images of other people.
Do you use a professional camera? My camera doesn’t have a job of its own.Rob.
joe_elwayParticipantDo use use you camera on “manual”? Manual
Do you manipulate your photographs? Yes: the usual “pop” stuff. No arty stuff though.
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? Autofocus 99.99999% of the time. Will use MF on my 1.4x and understand that Macro shooters prefer it.
Do you photoshop your images? Always (see manupulation).
Do use use a professional camera? Not yetCan’t say I see any snobbery here but there’s deffo snobbery on a famous international forum I used to be active on. Couldn’t stand it in the end. I felt like asking them what it smelt like having their heads up their &^$% all of the time.
What I like about here is that everyone appears to get feedback whether it is praise or constructive C&C. And there’s a bit of craic too. On the other site, only a select few would get comments so there was little learning going on.
ThorstenMemberDo use use you camera on “manual”? It depends!
Do you manipulate your photographs? It depends!
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? It depends!
Do you photoshop your images? It depends!
Do use use a professional camera? It depends!Have I taken the easy way out by not answering one way or another? It depends! I may use all of the above, none of the above or a combination of the above depending on specific circumstances. Now if one were to qualify the questions along the lines of adding something like “Most of the time do you…” I would probably give an entirely different set of answers!
andy mcinroyParticipantLOL,
I like the way this post has been interpreted. I didn’t mean to ask you all these particular difficult questions. I was more fishing for new questions that get asked of you from non-photographers and the answers you give.
I like this interpretion too though. I like the way everyone has given a quick answer because that is generally what we do when trying to explain ourselves to non-photographers at dinner parties. We don’t want to come across as photo bores after all.
So any other questions that you get asked by non-photographers at dinner parties?
Here’s couple of others.
How many megapixels is you camera.
A. Mine is 10 megapixels but it’s really more to do with the actual sensor sizzz zzzzz zzzz……..Do you use filters
A. Yes. But they are colourless filters (that gets them thinking).I just bought a *****, is it any good?
A. Great little camera. etc etcAndy
pete4130MemberSteveFEMemberHeh, mine goes the other way. People don’t ask me, I ask them. Like the guy with the little silver point and shoot, taking pics indoors in crap light without flash:
Me?”will you get a high enough shutter speed to get a non-blurry picture? I’m only getting 1/20 at f/1.8 and ISO1600″
Him?”Don’t worry, this baby’s got 7.1 megapixels, it’ll be sharp!”
Me?”_”
(actually no comment necessary, I’ll never explain anything without a complete Photography 101 course, and even then it might not get through)
FrankCParticipantSo any other questions that you get asked by non-photographers at dinner parties?
Two classics :
1. What camera should I buy ?
2. Your photos are great – you must have a really good camera
:)
CianMcLiamParticipantDo use use you camera on “manual”? No, red diesel.
Do you manipulate your photographs? I’ve made a mean folded boat out of one. Sometimes I like to roll them into a tube and stare at my dog through them also.
Do you use autofocus or manual focus? Much, much worse: I even leave the ‘beep’ on…
Do use use a professional camera? No, but my toothbrush is a professional model, I’m thinking of taking up brushing teeth as a side earner.pete4130MemberSteveFE wrote:
