1D mk III pricing
-
joe_elwayParticipant
Just been browsing around to get pricing on the new monster from Canon:
Note: No official USA prices yet. Expected to be $4500 max. European prices from Calumet… the UK price is in line with news from Practical Photogrpahy.
Netherlands: EUR3599 – ?2448 – $4787
Germany: EUR4299 – ?2924 – $5718
UK: EUR4411 – ?2999 – $5866
USA: EUR3384 – ?2301 – $4500If you’re in the USA then get one there. Otherwise, get an Aer Fungus/RyanCropduster cheapie to Holland and get one there. I reckon the Irish price will be around .. oh .. *sticks finger in air* ?5500.
B&H lists availability as May.
ThorstenMemberAidan – thanks for posting the results of your ad-hoc survey. Are you thinking of getting one of these beasts? My advice to anyone that it thinking of buying is to wait about 6 months. In that time the camera will have seen some real life action and any bugs or other flaws will be well documented on the WWW by then and also there should be noticeable downward trend in retail pricing by then. I have yet to see a camera that hasn’t dropped in price some time after it was released.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the initial price in Ireland was closer to the ? 6,000.00 mark! Even now I’m still seeing the 5D selling at ? 3,000.00 body only!
joe_elwayParticipantI sure am looking at one of them. I was looking at the 1D mk II and came *this close* to buying one when I started up in Belfast. That highly lucrative contract is coming to an end. I’m in the USA in early May but it’s not expected to be out until late May. Even if it was out when I’m there, it’ll be out of stock due to pre-orders.
The AF on my 350D is killing me. Soooo slow. And anythign beyond ISO 400 is not worth shooting. An upgrade is necessary.
It’s either a 1D or go to Africa again … doh!
?6K … hmmm …
The mk IIN is ?2200. The mk III is 3000. That’s a rise of 36%.The IIN is ?4000 here. Plus 36% = ?5440. I wouldn’t put it past Canon (Rip off) Ireland to add another 500, though.
GrahamBParticipantAnyone heard on the 40D yet. Sorry to hijack but you guys seem to be clued in on new products.
joe_elwayParticipantLooks like the rumour (now about 6 month old) might have been a wild goose. There’s still some talk that Canon might release something at the tail end of the year. I guess they can’t tick off anyone who bought a 30D which is just about 13 months old now, even if it’s just a 20D in a new body. Something has to be done seeing as the 400D matches it for AF speed and noise control and beats it for MP (I know, a marketing thing for most).
20D and 30D are still excellent bodies. We can see that by the quality of the shots that it’s users post here.
MikeanywhereParticipantThorstenMemberExtra MP (a la 400D) in a smaller sensor isn’t necessarily a good thing, so It really didn’t bother me too much when Canon brought out the 400D some six months after I bought a 30D (having previously used a 10D). There are other features in the 30D that in my opinion, still make it a superior body to the 400D, but at the same time many consumers are taken in by the MP race and I guess Canon had to do something if they weren’t to lose market share to the likes of Sony and Nikon and other budget SLR 10MP manufacturers.
I’d say that the most likely autumn releases from Canon will be a 5D replacement and possibly a 1Ds MkIII. It’s the 5D replacement that I’m interested in at this stage. I’ve come dangerously close to buying a 5D already but so far have continued to rely on my 30D – but I might slip before the year is out!

Cant wait to see what it finally comes out with all the hype
Must admit, I was very sceptical when I first heard about it, but the more I read about it the more it seems like a worthwhile upgrade for certain users. Not for me though, at this stage.
markcapilitanParticipantGood call Thorsten on leaving the camera in stores for about 6 months. When we (my old agency) got a bunch of new 1dmk2 cameras, they were all over the shop. It took me (a junior at the time) about 3 or 4 months to sort it out. The colours were just horrible. Eventually with new firmware and an ear bashing with Canon they sorted it. I heard B&H will be around $3999. Not that I’m getting one, I’m quite happy with my ‘N’ and love my new full frame 5D….gotta love that big bright viewfinder…just like the old days with film!!!
GrahamBParticipantI reckon I’m going to go from the 350d to the 30d. I was going to wait to wait for the 40d
but i don’t think there is going to be a big enough upgrade that will impact me.
Plus the 30d is dropping in price quiet a bit.
Does anyone in here use the the 30d and what did they move from.
It’s easy to find reviews on a camera but not as easy to find actual accounts on moving
from one camera to another and the noticable differences.mervifwdcParticipantI’ve ordered a MIII from Conns, and the price is not set firm, but to be less than 4,600 euro.
Merv.

I’m not one of these people that has to have the latest and the greatest in terms of upgrades and my own upgrade policy would generally be to upgrade with every other release (i.e. in my case I did not upgrade to the 20D, prefering to wait for the 20D replacement). People will argue that there is little difference between the 20D and the 30D, and right enough there aren’t too many. But there were a few important that really swung it for me in the end. The 10D is a very capable camera and I still have it as a backup. Going from 6MP to 8MP isn’t much of an upgrade, but it wasn’t about that for me. The biggest problem I had with the 10D was that it was an incredibly frustrating camera to use when used in “action” situations. It has a terribly small buffer and takes forever to write to the CF card. When you’re shooting RAW and start shooting kids, it doesn’t take long for the 10D to grind to a halt! This was the main reason for my upgrade.
The 20D would have provided the speed increase that I was looking for, but the 30D had a few extras that I really liked. The bigger screen was one, the ability to see individual R, G and B histograms was another and of course it’s is that little bit faster than the 20D.
I’m now looking at getting myself a 5D. I haven’t yet decided what I’m going to do with the 10D or 30D. Clearly I’ll be keeping one as a backup, just not sure which one.
If I were in your shoes, I’d try and get hold of a 5D if you can at all. If you get it in the right place it can be had for under ? 2,000.00, which isn’t bad at all. Alternatively, if you wait until the Autumn, it will probably be even cheaper when it’s replacement is announced. I’m almost certain that there will be a replacement for it by then (but I have no inside information on that :( )
Anyway, let us know which way you go!
joe_elwayParticipantAs predicted, Conns are more expensive than others. Prices I’ve heard for Ireland put it at around 4100 and 4200. Conns are charging 4400. All stock on their first delivery is sold out. I mentioned to them that thier prices were higher. In return, I got one of the infamous Conn rants. Way to win business, Conns … NOT!
MikeanywhereParticipantAs Photofest yesterday, a crowd at the show were advertising them for ?3592 + VAT (not a show special price either)
