Kitesurfing

I’m afraid this is another shot from my trip to Dollymoun Beach today. Lots of kitesurfers down there. From a distance the kites look like regular sized kites, but when these guys are walking their kites back onto the beach you realise what mammoths they are!
RodcunhaParticipantGreat photo and very good conversion, and this is a subject I like in particular.
When I went to Portugal last October I was hoping to photograph some kite surfers there but the weather was crap and couldn’t find anyone at the beaches…
Do you mind me asking where that beach is as I’m sure it will be far closer than Portugal!
Cheers,
Rod
pete4130MemberIt’s Dollymount Beach in Clontarf on the northside of Dublin, not very far from the city centre. Very popular for Kitesurfing as you can see….hope you get a chance to make it down there soon.
The GodfatherMemberI did not know that they kite surfed to that extent on dollymount it looks like traffic lights will soon be needed , it a nice shot tried taking some shots of kite surfers in Clare one holiday, they move so fast when on the water that its hard to get a good shot well for me anyway I like they way you have taken this shot
DavePParticipantNice image Pete. Just wonderng why you converted to B&W as thoses kites are usually very colourful.

RobMemberMaybe it’s just me, but I absolute love the compostion of
this one – in particular the way the line sets draw the eye
along the naturally occuring cloud patterns.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be convinced by the finishing here –
Surely colour would have been better? Overall the image
is very dark and consequently detail is lost in the foreground.
Worth revisiting before the conversion I’d say.Rob.

Cheers for the info Pete, I will surelly give it a try as soon as I get the chance…

pete4130MemberThanks for all the C&C guys! It’s actually a sizeable crop from the original. I only had my 18-50mm lens on at the time so literally just snapped the shot before it was too late. I tried a few crops and recrops and this one seemed to work best for me. There was alot of wasted space at the top of the frame so I tightened it down more to the subject. As for converting to B&W, the sky was overcast in some places and sunny in others. I didn’t really have the time to nail the exposure. It was a case of either blowing the highlights in the sky and keep the ground detail or vice versa. I compromised but it left me with rather muted colours other than the kites themselves. I went for a darker more silhouetted look and thought it had more going for it. Here is a colour version and the uncropped image.
RobMemberOoh I knew they’d be lovely colours. That sky isn’t as bad as you think
either. A bit more work on it could do wonders. Might I suggest – if you have
the raw file – to try Ross’s tutorial on merging two
images, or else Peter’s tutorial on contrast masks.
I’m sure you could get a lot more out of this image.Rob.
pete4130MemberI do have the RAw, so when I get achance I’ll give one or both of those tutorials a shot and show you the results.
Thanks again.
Pete.
rmMemberLove this picture and the cropping. Done a bit of post production onthe B&W image. C&C welcome. I’ve been sorting out my monitor calibration and colour profiles so I’d be interested to to hear if the sky looks blown to other people 8)
