Help please! Just been offered an Olympus E510 w/ 14-45mm lens at a very good price. I notice it is not widely discussed as most DSLR users here gravitate elsewhere. My p/s is Olympus and I love it. Does anyone have any knowledge or personal opinion of this camera to share with me? I have reviewed up to my eyeballs, and would love an opinion from someone like me, who really doesn’t have DSLR experience galore anyway. I am leaning in another direction, and thought I was done shopping :?

    Thanks mils,
    Shar

    Hi Shar

Don’t have the E510 myself, but absolutely love my E500. As you say,
not many here using them, but every shot I’ve posted here is from
an Olympus. I know the E510 is the newer version of the E500 with
10mp as opposed to 8mp, but reading the reviews there are a few more
slight improvements too. One terrific benefit; SSWF (Supersonic wave filter)
ensures you’ll never have dust bunnies on your sensor – almost eight
thousand actuations, several lens changes, and I’ve never seen one. Great display too,
two and half inches. The 14-45 is an okay kit lens, fairly lightweight and
not terribly fast, but easy enough to replace. And more and more four-
thirds lenses are coming on stream every year.
Maybe you need to try holding one in your hand first to see if you like the
feel of the camera – weight, balance, etc. – before forking out your hard-
earned moolah. Not to everyone’s taste, but I love my Olympus.

    Hope this helps

    Rob.

    Hi Sharon,

a good friend of mine uses this exact camera and he swears by it.
I don’t know a huge amount on it myself but I do know he is always raving about it.
check out DPreview.com and see if can get some actual samples and real world usage reports.

Thanks so much guys! I am delighted you give it glowing reviews, I was hoping for that! Now, like you say, have to give it another chance in my hands to see if I can do what I want with it in terms of reaching important bits with my fingers while holding it up to My face. Brilliant help you’ve given, much appreciated.

    Sharon,
dont know the camers but I have been using the Olympus E1 since it came on the market and have to say for colour quality it cant be beaten. I changed over to the Canon 1Ds MkII last year and while its a much better camera (should be for the price !) the colour balance from the E1 is better. I have 2 Olympus E1’s and use one as a backup out of studio and the other sits here in the studio and currently in use. My first “serious” digital camera was the Olympus E20P. A great camera except that it has an electronic shutter which is not as good as a mechanical shutter. Still have the E20P also but do not use it. The shutter is good for about 100,000 shots and really does die around that stage.

I honestly love Olympus and find they are great but Olympus fail big time on marketing. Their E1 system was exceptional but they failed to market it and tell people how good it is.

    Thanks to you too Gerry!
All that information is so helpful. I looked at the camera again yesterday, and now am very interested in it. It does deserve some serious attention. Am still weighing all my options at this point now.

Do keep us posted. I have a great liking for Olympus but they really have not come into the Professional Market at all.
Mind you, I hear they are going to finally do a replacement for the E1 which would greatly interest me.

Anyway, let us know how you get on and I’d be greatly interested in your thoughts on Olympus (if you go down that road).
Certainly, reliability should not be an issue ………. I have an E1 here that has done 3 years solid work without a glitch.

Still considering everything at this point gentlemen….BUT…

Rob I finally had the time this afternoon to look over your shots on here..and..Stunning!!!…I know it’s 95% talent and I couldn’t count on similar results anytime soon if ever.. but..if I get this camera and a couple of the lenses you have…can I follow you around? 8)

    Getting antsier by the moment,

Why Sharon, you’ve made me blush

You’d be more than welcome to come with me on a few shoots (not that I could
teach you a whole lot – I’m learning everything I know from the myriad fine photographers
here on PI). Hope you get your camera soon. 8)

    Rob.
