The tennis images on that site aren’t, what you’d call excellent. They’re stocky shots, nothing more. And IMO the only difference between them and yours, are the fact it’s andy roddick, venus williams and whoever (and they were taken on a big lens). Another example is a simple pan shot of a car….is it a better picture to have an F1 car in the frame than a renault clio? I think most people would say the shot of the F1 car is better…even though they’re essentially the same shot. It’s the way our minds work…now I’m babbling!! You get the message hopefully!!

I guess you could call it ‘subject’ envy…

Terrific shots Merv. Nice and sharp and well composed.
Nothing at all wrong with any of these…

That’s true Mark, but there is a difference relating to the speed the professional players move, and the players I’m capturing!. When I started taking tennis shots 2 years ago, I could barely catch the class 5 (lower class) players in action, I can now get pretty close to keeping time with the class 2 players, but cannot catch (regularly anyway) the very top players as the move to quick. The thread I pointed to was just to show the timing and sharpness that can be achieved, and it’s something I would love to be able to do (though I agree, the shots are more stocky).

As to the big lens, 400/2.8? I can but dream :-) Love one, but could not picture carrying it about! Held one once. Bloody hell!

    Subject envy…well put!!
400 F2.8, nasty lens…too big and too short for my use back in the day!! Bloody sharp though. I was forced to use it for 2 years…before being forced to use a 600 F4 for a few monthas. I then had the pleasure of a 500 F4 for 2 years….that’s the lens you want!
