Like this one Graham. Although we may have to start sending royalties to this guy, he’s appeared on so many shots on PI now…
Well captured and framed. Only thing I could add is that maybe you could lose the white paper bag on the seated boys right as it’a bit distracting and doesn’t really add to the image.
Once again.. nice thought provoking shot and well presented.
GrahamBParticipantThanks Robbie, I was going to take the bag out but to be honest it’s part of a story that I was a little hesitant to post.
When I initially framed the shot the boy was crying and sobbing, I was waiting for the two younger guys to reach the ATM
as I felt they presented the shot with a little more impact than the adults before them.
Someone walked along and instead of change the guy placed an O?Brien?s bag beside the boy probably figuring he needed the food.
The boy instantly stopped crying and to be honest looked a little annoyed by the gesture. He very quickly put the sandwich under his coat
and started crying again.
It was mentioned in a previous post that the crying may have been a ploy to obtain a more sympathetic audience, I initially dismissed this notion but
after Saturday I’m not so sure anymore. Thanks for the comments though, i actually spent a lot of time on this one using Ciarans B+W tutorial to try and get it just right.
FlipflipParticipantReally well captured. Well done.
Waiting for the two young lads to reach the ATM was obviously the right choice. The contrast is what makes the shot. I mean it would still be a good shot if it was two adults but the young lads just show the two extremes.
GrahamBParticipantThanks Flip, I was just trying to slow down and wait for the shot i wanted rather than settling for
the quick option. Appreiciate the commentspete4130MemberI saw that young lad walking down Westmoreland street the other week, I recognised him from the other posts that people had put up on here….not a tear in his eye or a worry in the world while walking with his mates….he was laughing and joking.
ExpresbroParticipantWell it would appear that this kid has developed a routine that he uses to gain sympathy, and obviously more importantly from his point of view, money. I also don’t doubt that if the opportunity presented itself he’d be gone with your camera and equipment in a shot.
But as far as I know his addiction is very much real and obviously the reason he developed this system in the first place. In the end of the day, he is still a victim. Just not all victims are sympathetic. In this case I reckon the victim has become predator himself to feed his habit. I know people who have gone down a similar road due to addiction and have commited acts that I personally find reprehensible. But the real criminals are the ones in the big expensive cars and the villas in Spain that seem to be pretty much above the law. We wont be posting any pics of them sitting on our streets crying..pretend or otherwise methinks.
GrahamBParticipantWell said Robbie.
Make no mistake, that my sympathy for this guy hasn’t diminished.
It may have shifted slightly. Whether it be addiction or poverty the guy is still
sitting on a street corner begging. What ever the motives the need is still there.
He may be fooling people into giving him money but it is no different than the guy who plays
the tin whistle ( badly ).But just to be clear, it’s a good picture right
ExpresbroParticipantAliParticipantLove the idea Graham :) very well captured too. not too sure about the conversion. It looks like the midtones need to be lifted a wee bit? Could just be my dodgy laptop though. :) And yep – it’s still a good picture
GrahamBParticipantThanks Ali, I’ve actually revisited the shot a few times and there is room for improvement on the conversion.
I’m going to try and spend some quality time with the shot to see if I can bring it out properly.ben4130ParticipantIf you take the number 27 bus in the late morning you can find this kid smokig crack and other assorted drugs down the back fairly sure he lives in darndale.
I was going to write more but ill leave it at that.constantineParticipantPoor kid.
Addiction can take you to dark places, no matter what age. Probably thinks he has no choices for life except carry on the way he is at the moment.
I feel awful sorry for that kid, unfortunatly, he is the only person who can do anything about it. If anyone is taking a picture of him again write this number 1890 412 412 on a piece of paper and drop it in his cup, along with a few coins for the call (think it may be free) an tell him that the people on the other end will help him, if he wants it.
Remember, “There but for the grace of God am I”
