These threads might be helpful : Some of them go back a bit but there are tips in them all – you can just do a search yourself and rummage through the results

I take my camera gear with me alot when I travel… It all fits into a small backpack – i just carry it on as hand luggage and have never had a problem, If you’re still not sure check with Ryanair or the websites of the airports you will be using ! As for personal safety in Rome.. I guess like anywhere else just be aware of whats happening around you and you’ll be fine .. You’ll get some cracking shots..

    Clawless,

I’ve always brought my camera on as hand luggage. I’d never leave it to the baggage handlers. Not only in case something happened like it being damaged, go missing, but it also cab get very cold in a cargo hold at 30,000 feet, then there is condensation to think of as well and usually with Ryanair their flights are short, so its going from one temperature/pressure to another and back again quickly which would worry me (maybe I’m over paranoid?).
Last time I flew Ryanair was last November I think and I had no trouble with all my camera kit (although it usually takes a while to explain to security about my wireless radio receivers for my flashes when they are marked with transmitter and receiver…especially when they turn them on and the little red light starts flashing).

There’ll be no problem with that, their carry on allowance is 10kg. I took my 300D, 4 lenses, portable storage, chargers etc on a flight with them to Grenoble a couple of weeks ago, with no problem. You might get asked to open the bag for security (bag containing loads of wires etc!), but generally as soon as the see it’s camera gear they’re fine.

Can’t really say anything about carrying the camera around in Rome, as I’ve never been there, but I’d say just apply common sense in line with any other big city.

Hello Clawless just back from Paris no poblems travelled with Ryanair no problem carrying on the bag which had camera, two lenses, flash gun, spare batteries and memory cards. No problems anywhere along the line. I was in Rome last summer took the camera everywhere with me no problems. However you need to be very vigilant, don’t leave anything on the ground when you are taking a phorograph, it may not be there when you look down. Keep everything close, be vigilant and you’ll be fine.

Have a good trip Rome offers loads of opportunities for the photographer. If you go to the top of St. Peter’s Dome it’s a fair haul up and very narrow and low towards the end.

    All the best
