Be very careful what you touch your sensor with, if you scratch the filter which sits over it (what you’re actually cleaning), you’re hosed.
This site describes well the various methods. I’ve used swabs I bought online here on my Canon 300D, which do an OK job, but there’s a welded on spot they refuse to shift. Copperhill has a very good reputation (they’re going to be my next attempt as I’m getting tired of all that spotting in Lightroom/Photoshop), but in Europe you need to buy from here, as they can’t ship the Eclipse fluid by air. This is a bit of a pain as it’s a Swiss company, and their prices are pretty outrageous compared to the US website. Does anybody know if the swab/pads can be bought elsewhere – I already have plenty of Eclipse?

AimeeParticipantI dunno, can you not bring it to a shop for cleaning.. i know it’s more expensive but you don’t need to get it done that often.. do you?
Mr.HParticipantHi vtec,
I have the copperhill kit as described in Johns post above. The method seems to be effective (if a little nerveracking). Generally the sensor cleans OK although I am now staring to get a couple of darker spots that appear to be unshiftable which is a little worrying, but I assume these are dead pixels rather than dust.
However I echo Johns thoughts on price.. when you break things down in the pack to component level you aren’t really get too much for your money. If you know what you are looking for I am sure you can get things a fraction of the price individually. Having said that there is probably enough peco-pads/cleaning solution in the kit to keep you in keep your sensor clean for many a year, so in the long term it may not be a bad investment.
Where abouts in Dublin are you based? I work in sandyford so if you are anywhere near there you could borrow the kit for a ‘try before you buy’ test run.
Mr.HParticipantHi Vtec,
Hope you don’t mind but I will retract my offer of the loan. Just looked on the copperhill wesite and it seems that the D80 has a different sensor swab than mine. I am not sure what the difference is (they are both 14mm wide, so possibly the depth of the sensor and hence the length of the swab?). The difference is probably minimal, however you do have to be very careful doing this. Therefore I wouldn’t want to be responsible for any misshaps in the cleaning due to using the wrong kit.
Sorry!
Gary.
carlParticipantSome interesting stuff on cleaning your sensor:

Nikon APS-C sensors are marginally bigger than the Canon ones – I think about 1mm or so, but enough to make the Nikon crop factor 1.5 as opposed to 1.6 on Canons. You’d probably be fine using the smaller swab on the Nikon sensor, unless you had crud at the very top/bottom.
vtecMemberhi, thanks for the replies people, ive had a look at that site before and have cleaned the sensor with the wipes i have for it, but its a stubborn bit on there and just wont seem to budge.
can anyone reccomend a camera shop to do it for me? and have any ideas on pricing? ive tried it with no luck so i dont want to cause any damage to it.,cheers :wink:

You’re in the same boat as me then Richie :(. The swabs did a great job of everything else on the sensor, except for this one spot. If you do come up with a solution, let us know.

GCPParticipantSomething new I’ve come across. It may be worth looking at also;
