You will get a press pass. However, a press pass does not automatically gain you entry to any event.
You must apply for and get an accrediation for coverage of the event from the organisers. While I have
a press pass if I were to show up at a concert or sports event I would not gain free admission as I am
really an unknown whereas if John Carlos or Declan Cahill showed up beside me they would probably be
escorted in to a VIP area. I also hold an Inter Contenential Press Pass but I still dont think I’d get too far
waving it about. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its how it is really. Now you could be lucky and
much depends on the length of your neck.
Its still worth looking at the NUJ site and seeing what is involved.
Probably the easiest way to start is to convince a local paper / magazine to let you cover an event for them, and to get them to apply for a pass for each specific event you’re attending. Once you have a few under your belt, then you can join the NUJ and get a generic pass. Like Gerry advised though, this is no golden ticket!! You’d typically need passes for every restricted event you wish to attend. Get on somebody’s books, and then get them to do the hard work for you!
