PINK !!

Probably the last decent shot I took from the zoo, I loved these birds and the light was particularly great on their plumage (and their eyes are spooky ) .. but it was virtually impossible to isolate one in full profile .. this was my best (favourite) attempt. I know its not a conventional study .. but would I get away with it ?? :)

ExpresbroParticipantThis guy must have been a bugger to expose for Lorraine? What with the very bright highlights on his head and back and the dark black of his beak. Compositionally I think it is fine. I’m so used to seeing these guys in full profile with their long legs that it’s nice to actually see one up close and personal. Really well isolated against the background and focus is spot on as well.
That’s a thumbs up from me :D
mervifwdcParticipantHi,
Tricky one this, The sparkle on the water behind the bird is too eye catching, might be better darkened a little. Also, the birds back is very white where the light hits it. Could you try a portrait crop, loosing most of the body? Leave the neck about 1/3 in from the right?
Nice bird though!
Merv.
RobMemberVery nicely exposed Lorraine.
I see what you mean about the spooky eyes, never
noticed that before about those birds.
While I am a fan of that particular crop ratio, I’m inclined
to find myself looking for just a little more bird at the bottom
of the frame with this one, just to allow a little more of that
lovely curve to show.
Other than that, super shot.Rob.
S-ManMemberryan52MemberGreat shot Lorraine, I tried very hard to be distracted by other elements of this photo but each time my eye keeps getting drawn back to those eyes which are perfectly in focus. I think it is brilliant.
LoGillParticipantThanks for the tips and comments everyone :)
There aren’t any blown highlights but I can see the distraction Merv and Robbie mention in the lighter areas.. Not a big job to tone those down a bit ..
Portrait crop .. I tried it.. but liked the fluffy pink feathers so much I couldn’t :) But I see that I may have to :( and of course Rob .. I’ll aim to get a bit more of the curve of the neck
This nature lark isn’t as easy as some of you make it look ;)
Thanks

ValentiaMemberGood shot Lorraine. I would be tempted to try a “brave” tight crop. Just the bird and even cropping a little off the beak (no forger that bit ;-). Really tight, just to see. I’ve no way of trying it here at work but I have a feeling……….
mervifwdcParticipantIf I want to have a quick look at a crop, I just move the browser window partly off the screen so it shows me the bit I would leave. Quick and dirty, but you can do the bottom, left or right if you want. Just not the top :-)

Good thinking Batman!!
GrahamBParticipantCracking shot Lo. really well taken and presented very well IMHO.
It’s even better in my book because I have tried on several occasions to get a decent shot of
these guys and failed
