Opinions on Sigma flash

    Hi all
I’m thinking of purchasing a Sigma EF500DG Super flash to use with my Mikon D50. i normally shoot with natural light and probably would not use it overmuch, but would like to have a good flash for when I do need it. I can get one in a local shop (for local people!) for about ?199. Would it be a good purchase? Over to you…
    Thanks
    Mick

    Hi Eddie
The price I got was from a shop in Cork. a shop around the corner had the same flash at ?269 so I’m eager to buy it if I get a positive opinion

If I was a betting man, I’d bet that the cheaper shop is on Oliver Plunkett St. and the one around the corner is on a pedestrianised street leading to Patrick Street?

You wouldn’t lose that bet Thorsten! On a side note I was shopping for headphones yesterday. The Virgin megastore had a set for ?67. I went next door (literally!) to Argos and bought the same set for ?45. It pays to shop around as they say.

But anyway to resurrect my original query has anybody any experience with Sigma flashes-good bad or indifferent? Do they throw a whole new light on things or are they just a flash in the pan? (sorry:-)). Answers on the back of a post card please…

    Mick,
I just bought the same flash for my Fuji S3 and i like it. Easy to use and good value for money as far as i’m concerned. I got Mine in dublin for the same price.

Thanks Neil. I think I will go for it! Now to smuggle it past the wife. Perhaps I can say it came with the camera……

Hi Neil where did you get the flash at that price in Dublin as I am also thinking of getting one.
Mick if there are more than one in Cork ( one for canon ) drop me a line and a contact for the shop.
    Thanks

Eddie, I got mine in the Dublin Camera Exchange on Trinity Street. Found them very helpful in there too

I have both the 550ex and the Sigma. I’ve been using them on ettl with an ste2 as trigger until recently. With the aid of strobist.com I’ve jumped into the manual flash world and have much more control. I had modified my 550ex to include a socket to allow a PC sync connection to the camera (I also have an off camera shoe cord that I put a longer cable on). However, when I saw there were wireless triggers that had been updated for the canon flashes on Strobist I bought a set. Great. Now for the good and bad on the Sigma.
I was able to trigger the 550ex from the wireless and have the Sigma slave optically, ie when the Sigma detected a flash, it fired automatically. Cool.
I tried the Sigma on the wireless trigger. No joy. Wouldn’t fire at all.

Of course it only applies if you are shooting wireless and I suspect that if you tape the 4 pins off and leave the centre pin for the hotshoe untouched it will work.

One thing that is cool about the optical slave on the Sigma is that you can turn down the on camera flash (or block it with black processed film) and trigger the Sigma from it.

Hope this is not over eveyones head..
