JerryParticipant
Hi,
I’m an amateur photographer and will be in Ireland 06/16/2007 for approx. 2 wks. Will be traveling w/ approx. 20 family members, so will have limited time for photos. Would like some help as to what must be photographed, and best times. A short itinerary: Dublin, 3 days, Waterford, 1 day, Kilkenney, 2 days, and then to Galway where we’;ll spend the remaining time. Hopefully we’ll get to the Aran Islands. Any help in what should be seen and photographed would be appreciated. Thanks,
JerryP.S. I’m the only non Irish in the group, so I really need help.
joe_elwayParticipantDublin: Easy… hop onto one of the open top tour buses for a day. You can hop on/off as and when you want. It passes loads of the “must see” tourist spots. As to what must be shot …. that depends on what interests you!
Waterford and Kilkenny aren’t all that big so you’ll not have much trouble finding somthing of interest. You can walk the main part of Waterford town in a few hours. At least the last time I was there, there were lots of typical touristy looking (on the outside) pubs. Reginalds Tower (by the tower hotel) might make for a nice shot. Just wondering if some of the older parts of town (residential streets) might have good shots … I’m thinking of the are up the hill from where the police station was in town (can’t remember the area name). It’s been about 12 years since I was in that part of the city. Deffo some old streets down around the shopping center in town that would have been interesting if I had been into photogrpahy when I was in college down there.
MartinParticipantWhen you are in Galway try to get out into Connemara it a very nice place and one of the nicest places in Ireland great for pictures, well worth a visit
Below is a link to a previous thread where i had some photos of Connemara to give you an idea as to what to expect. Warning though it rains allot there

MartinPixelleMemberSome suggestions for Kilkenny – go for Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice’s Cathedral with nearby Round Tower, St. Canice’s Steps are photogenic too.
JMcLParticipantFor Waterford, despite the lack of time, try to take the coast road between Tramore and Dungarvan – it’s a fantastic stretch of coast. Unfortunately due to where the sun rises and sets in mid June, it’s not the best time of year photographically (that’d be between September and April), but there’s still much to see. Dunmore East, about 10 miles from Waterford is a nice fishing village.
The Mahon falls in the mountains north-east of Dungarvan (ok they don’t compare to the Sierras, but we have to make the best of what we have :) ) is a lovely spot.

joe_elwayParticipantGood idea about the Mahon Falls. Just about a 1/2 hour out the cork road, turn right at the signs and drive about 10 minutes up a side road if I remember correctly. Was really cloudy when I went there but looked stunning. Been meaning to go back some day.
ExpresbroParticipantThe Copper Coast that runs through the Gaeltacht area of Waterford has the most stunning views. Was there 2 years ago driving and I really wanna go back someday with my camera. Dunmore East as John said is a gorgeous village and has a really nice cliff walk along the coast.
Enjoy

8)steelydanParticipantWaterford City for its old Viking walls. Aidan where you are talking about on the hill is, Ballybricken it has the Garda station and the old Jail wall (which surounds the station) Copper Coast is a fantastic drive, was only out there the other night to start an Audio Visual for this years AV.Tramore ,Dunmore, Cheeekpoint.. Mahon Falls is probably a couple of hours shooting by the time you park the car and Walk into the falls itself.
What kind of photography are you mainly into Jerry and that might narrow down the choices of places to go.And depending on what shift i am working ,I might be able to arrange to meet you for a few hours and show you Waterford
