Camera Cleaning

Hi,
When i take photos now there are a lot of dust speck on the image. I have checked the lens i use & they seem ok. Whats the safest way to go about cleaning the camera, i think the dust is inside the viewfinder area as in inside the glass. hope thats makes sense.??Also what do you all use to clean your lens & cameras?
markcapilitanParticipantWelcome to the world of digital :D
The dust is on your sensor, which is located behind the cameras mirror. The sensor will attract dust whenever you change lenses, turn it on, whatever! The safest way to clean it is to buy a blower/blower brush (don’t use the brush part). There’s usually a function on the camera called Sensor clean, where you’ll press the shutter button and the mirror will flip up and stay up so you can blow/clean the sensor. Make sure the cameras batteries are full for this or plug it in.
Some people use compressed air, including Canon services, but if you use this wrongly, you’ll cover the sensor in spray goo!!ThorstenMembermarkcapilitan wrote:

I only clean my sensor with a contact based cleaner maybe twice a year, the rest of the time I simply use a blower as Mark described. Works fine. The only thing you need to be careful of is that you don’t put too much pressure into the air you blow into the camera, as it may force the dirt in between the AA-filter and the sensor, where you’ll never get it out. Another reason not to use compressed air! With a manual blower you decide just how forceful you blow the air.
clawlessParticipantjoe_elwayParticipantAny decent photo shop … it’s often called a “Rocket Blower”. It looks like one of those old German hand grenades. The pump part of it is around the size of a tennis ball with a 4 inch or so nozzle coming out of it.
ThorstenMember7DayShop have it listed for GBP 3.49. It’s the Hama Hurricane Blower, which is the same thing as the aforementioned rocket but without the silly wings :)
markcapilitanParticipantThe rocket is slightly bigger with more of a puff IMO, but the hama is nice for taking in the bag with you….always have one in the bag!

I think that’s so important that it’s worth repeating – Always have on in the bag!!!

It makes for nice cushioning too :)
richiehatchMemberJust a word of warning about those blowers… I have the Hama version… if left for a while between blowing be sure to give a load of blows on a reflective surface before blowing your sensor… rubber being a natural material degrades over time… This degrading process leaves a sort of white dust on the surface of the rubber. If you blow this powder onto your sensor its difficult to remove. try blowing it onto the surface of a mirror first until all the dusty stuff is gone. I have started to use a Sensor Brush from the company Visible Dust… while expensive it dose seem to work a bit better than the blowers..! Havent the balls to use the liquid cleaners yet..!

a baby snot sucker works just as well, and at $2 instead of $10-15.
bethIf i go out shopping tomorrow for a ‘baby snot sucker’ tomorrow – what is that I actually need to look for – i have never heard of such a thing and if BSS does the same as blower brush for $2 i’m interested? would you post a linked picture?

i had to google it for the name, but its a nasal aspirator (snot sucker sounds so much cooler.. :D) it does the same thing as the rocket blower, just stick the part that goes up the baby’s nose into the camera and squeeze the air out. any store that carries baby necessities should have it. sorry, we have wal-mart, target and big stores like that over here that sell stuff cheap, so i’m not sure where you go in ireland.
heres a pic as requested, the pic is from google so i’m just posting the link to the jpg instead of the pic. http://www.jusonneuk.co.uk/matern4.jpg

Jeez Aiden you must have a tiny butt
positronMemberWell, I have one of those q-ball rocket blowers, and I didn’t know blowing hard could be bad!
I didn’t know how much dust is there in the sensor because everything looked okay with normal glass, but then I had a go at the pinhole thing. I got hold of a spare body cap, with a kitchen knife, a needle, a bit of tin foil and cello tape, and in five minutes I rigged a little pinhole contraption – which seems to produce “”interesting”” photos, not sharp, but massive depth of field). But the images were full of strange pattern, which I think is tiny dust particles and a demo of light ‘interference’!
Here’s a 100% crop.
