I took my son to the reptile village in Gowran today, was a bit hard work trying to photograph these things but let me know what you think

Nicely taken Steve. Did you do anything to get the shadow effect in the 1st or was it natural?

The second … I like a lot but I wonder if it might not have been better as a portrait with the head in the top right third intersection? It just feels slightly off balanced to me. Could just be me though … I am slightly off balance as you may have noticed! The factial details are so nicely sharpened. I’m guessing you used an articificial blur afterwards?

no the first one is natural shadows, well not created by me, and created by the lamp in the tank. I was using f1.8 so minor DOF i think helped

Second one i did try to put the eye in the top left third intersection never thought about portrait. As for the blur, I have not added any blur to the image its all the lens, actually thinking about it thats not quite true, I did a little noise reduction which could of added a little blur (but not very much it looks almost the same in the raw.

    oh heres one more too.

I like that one… super detail and in focus where it counts.

I used my 50mm 1.8, I think I like the look of the 1.4 version the background blur is not great on the 1.8, particulary on the noice of these shots, they were are quite high ISO

I bet that 3rd one will look “Dave Fanning” (Fab) in a nice glossy, high quality print.

Third one’s a winner for me. Super sharp with
    brilliant detail. Nice work…

    thanks rob

the only limiting factor to getting shots of these guys was finding tanks with cleanish glass

I love photographs of these guys Steve. Especially when they are as good as No.3.

Where is Gowran anyway? Excuse my geographical ignorance…

Might take a trip and have a looksie myself.
